Wordpress SEO - tags, categories and rankings

Hi,
I am working on 2 fairly new sites - both use wordpress as their CMS.
I am using the Wordpress SEO plugin by Yoast and it does a great job.
I have just noticed though that my categories and tags are ranking far better than the pages themselves. This could just be because the tags are very keyword focused and match the search queries.
Or is there a duplicate content problem?
The SEO plugin allows you to noindex,nofollow etc the tags and categories. Should I do that?
For example the search query:
daily deals Tasmania
brings up category and tag results but not actual site pages.
I made a new blog post on the other site which Google is sort of aware of now. The search:
site:Settled In - Moving to Tasmania Home search and relocation services Hobart Tasmania myer
brings up the tag page and not the post itself. Again wondering if this is caused by duplicate content and Google only wanting one occurrence of the page in the index?
