I think it has something to do with the Panda update, especially since Google is the entity that assigns PR to pages. Some of my sites were PR 3 and 4. Then they were 0, and now they are back at what they used to be. If your PR was real, it'll come back.

Following reasons may cause amongst a decline of page Ranks:
    Link exchange on rogue sources
Use of prohibited SEO tricks on the Web site
Links from trusted sites are lost
The relevance of the website in the “competitor” fell
Increased use of advertising and non-relevant content on the Web site

Me personally I care very little for PR. It's nice to have a high PR but what really matters is rankings and if they're still the same then does it really matter?

PR only matters - Well to me anyway - when I'm buying backlinks as PR is a good indicator of the strengh of that backlink

It could also be a problem with whatever you are using to check PR.

Did you check other sites with known PR to make sure your software is working ok?

Or did you move servers? Sometimes that will cause a temporary drop as well.

PR is important. And I have not really seen sudden PR drop from PR5 to PR0 in a day. Did you or your client do something drastic like 301 redirect to another domain? If I knew the domain in question perhaps I could have helped you.

Audit your website, check for duplicate contents, this huge PR drop may only be because of the Google panda update, check if your content and backlinks are of high quality.
