Going after 100k/month keyword -- any tips?

Hi guys, I'm going after an exact match keyword that has about 100,000 searches a month. The number 1 to 5 spots are filled with guys who have the keyword in the domain name while mine is only related. The number one spot has about 1,500 visible backlinks pointing to it with about maybe 10 or so pages of content.

I'm currently ranked 20th and my site has about 40 pages of content targeting different keywords in the same niche including the page targeting the keyword.

Do you guys think I can out rank them if I create backlinks like mad and also how long would it take?

    I think it's quite possible. But of course the total SEO factors will determine that. The first thing make me feel confident about such a thing would to having more qualified and more engaging content than my competitors. Do you trust your content on this? And don't forget to having quality backlinks (choose quality over quantity).

      There are SOO many factors when it comes to things like this...

      While i can't tell you how long it will take because even though i know it has around 1500 bl's, i don't know the quality of those/optimization on the site.

      Also, ranking for any keyword is possible as long as you have enough money/time. It just may not be the most profitable to spend that much time to get it.
