Unexplained Google Rankings Drop

Hi there.

I am experiencing a very difficult SEO related issue and am looking for some reliable feedback and help to resolve this issue.

I have been running an expansive senior care content/directory site for the last few years (Gilbert Guide). We have continued to increase our rankings and traffic from Google (traffic increased over 300% in the last 4 months alone) and other search engines, but Google has been the source for ~75% of our traffic. Our content is continually expanding each week and our directory of senior care providers nationwide also continues to get updated regularly.

A few weeks ago, our referral traffic from Google (all organic, never SEM) dropped through the floor. But we cannot find ANY explanation for it. We have contacted Google to ask if we have been penalized, but they can take up to 3 weeks to respond and will only say YES or NO and do not give any explanation as to why, if you have in fact been penalized.

These are some of the strange things we are seeing:
* In Google Webmaster tools, we are not shown as penalized
* Some pages of our site are still organically ranked but their rankings have decreased in position. But most of our search terms have dropped off the map and show no ranking anymore.
sundowners syndrome - was ranked 7, now not at all
supportive homecare - was ranked 4, now not at all
types of dementia - was ranked 11, now not at all
...and on, and on
* You can find our site by typing the domain into Google search and if you do site:gilbertguide.com, you can see that there are over 35K+ pages currently indexed.
* We do not have any spam on our site...all of our content is original (written by us). At least I can't seem to find anything that would be considered spam. We have no more than one ad served on any of our pages.
* We moved our site to a new hosting location a month ago but the domain never changed...only where the DNS points to.
* Our headers are clean and return a 200 (success) code
* All redirects are and have always been 301 redirects
* We modified our main site navigation 5 weeks ago but it has become much more targeted/keyword rich for the types of phrases and words we have been ranked for. Used to have a few CSS-based drop downs to consolidate some of the options.
* We used to have an SEO firm that bought external links on random blog sites but we stopped that effort back at the end of September/beginning of October. Maybe one or more of those sites are now considered "bad" by Google and we got hit by association. But I would think we would not see a hit this far down the road after discontinuing those link campaigns.

That is all I can think of. If you have any insights as to how we can troubleshoot this issue since Google provides zero feedback, it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

Jason Gilbert

    Hi Jason,

Sorry to hear about your problem.

You mentioned that you have Google Webmaster Tools account. If you check the diagnostics section you will see any issues Google may have had crawling your site.

You mentioned that you switched hosting recently. I have seen some poorly managed hosts sink the ranking of websites due to slow load times or too much server down time. I've even seen issues where hosting companies blocked those pesky Googlebots that keep visiting.

You Google Webmaster Tools diagnostics should point out some of these issues, but it would be wise to invest in some web server monitoring software.

Sadly, many unscrupulous SEO firms will build websites that they control and build your backlinks upon their own network of sites. If you stop paying, they yank all the backlinks and sink your rankings.

You mentioned that your SEO firm was buying backlinks on blogs, if those purchased backlinks were monthly and not permanent backlinks, they may have been pulled down.

If you have a record of all the locations that you received backlinks from, you may be able to identify this problem, without those records you can only speculate.

Getting down to basics I see that your site contains large amounts of invalid HTML. While this may not be the source of your problem it could be contributing. Why not fix these errors?

Since I'm unable to see your navigation links, from before you changed them, I cannot tell you if I agree or not that you have actually improved on them, I will assume that you have. I have seen folks make what they thought were improvements but they actually hurt their rankings.

Regardless of the cause, the solution is to perform all of the basics of solid SEO on a consistent basis. If I had to guess I would say that your main issue is probably the loss of backlinks, but it's just a guess based on the information in your post.

Thanks for your detailed response, Don. I will check into the backlinks created by the old SEO firm.

In reviewing diagnostics on webmaster tools, one big thing I found was that we have over 36K URLs that are restricted by our robots.txt file, which is expected. We keep search engines from crawling our general site search function and also our directory pages where the URLs have dynamic parameters. These directory pages are all covered through a set of SEO navigation friendly pages we created.

The one thing I found in this list of 36K restricted URLs was a group of 325 links where somebody tried to use a program on our site to redirect people to some porn or spam site. This program is used to count the number of times each provider listing is viewed and we have protection so that any redirection attempt to pages outside of our website will dump the user back to our homepage. We saw a traffic spike of people coming through and getting redirected to the home page...so the program worked.

But I was surprised to see this list of restricted URLs show up in this restricted URL list because that means that Google crawled some other site that had these links posted and then tried to crawl these URLs on their own. If the site(s) that either posted these links or the sites that the user is supposed to be redirected to is on Google's banned list, then maybe our site got associated with it, too, and therefore got our rankings cut.

This site won't let me post sample URLs but they are in the format of:
    mydomain/click.php?goto=theirdomain/go.php?sid=5%26parameter=Lisa+Ann+nude

Most of these happened around December 18-24 which corresponds to the slide in our referral traffic. The 18th was our last highest traffic day ever and then it dropped out over the next 2 days. The one thing that is not explained is a similar but temporary dip for 2 days in the prior week...the traffic came back 20% higher after the temporary dip for about a week before dropping.

      Hi Jason,

Google generally will not penalize you for inbound links, however they are brutal if you link out to bad neighborhoods.

You may have other problematic links that have gone undetected. I recommend that you get a copy of Xenu's Link Sleuth. Use this program to generate a report to show all your outbound links and broken links. Study this report carefully looking for issues with your outbound links.

Don is spot on, I think one reason will almost certainly be the change of server. I would suggest checking all of your page titles to ensure that your longtailed keywords are in order.

Then I'd do a simple Google Alert on a few of the main page titles to ensure regular crawls. I'll take a good look at the site and see what else may be happening.

    Bad Links
Here are some of the URLs I found in the restricted list that somebody fed to Google:
    http://www.gilbertguide.com/click.ph....UPSKIRT.PHOTO
    http://www.gilbertguide.com/click.ph...URKE.NUDE.FREE
    http://www.gilbertguide.com/click.ph...WJOB.PICS.FREE
    http://www.gilbertguide.com/click.ph...ELECTRA.SHOWER
    http://www.gilbertguide.com/click.ph...WOOD.SEXY.PICS

Wow, somebody out there doesn't like you! You need to close the hole on click.php immediately! Then do a reinclusion request.

I agree on change of server being a possible culprit. Response time is actually one of the more important triggers in the google algorithm (from what many people have seen). Another thing that can happen is that you may have moved to a server that shares an IP address with a bad neighborhood, which can often happen on shared servers. For small enough servers, Google can think you're all related because you share an IP.

Another possibility is the paid incoming links. If they were "dofollow" links and Google busted the link providers, then you may have seen the credit for your inbound links evaporate. You're not being penalized for buying links, but you're all of a sudden not getting any value for them which looks like the same thing. The same person that blackhatted your outgoing links probably also reported you for buying links.

Yes, there are people out there that specialize in "negative SEO."
