SEO - In-house or third party?

Hi All,

I need a genuine advice from the SEO experts on my problem - Should I hire an SEO expert to work in-house or work with a third-party and outsource the SEO work?

More in details...
I have a dating portal and I have been working with third-parties who have been working on my list of keywords for SEO for this portal. The 1st company who I hired wasn't doing a good job and had to switch to a new company after 4 months.

The 2nd company started working on 10-15 keywords and its been 6 months but they could get only 3-4 keywords to the top 10. Though this company is working on a contract system, where we would pay the balance only once they get all the keywords to the top, they haven't been able to deliver. And I am only losing traffic to my site and spending more on PPC!

The reasons which they give why they are not able to deliver:
> "We have done 1500 good quality back-linking. Doing more might result in Google penalizing the site. Also, we are waiting for the Google update."
> The competition is tough (no doubt it is tough since we are targeting 'dating' related keywords which have a high competition).
> Give us more time as we keep trying.

What I have been thinking?
I could hire an SEO/PPC expert who could work exclusively full time at my office an d concentrate on the keywords. And since dating is a vast field, we could cover more keywords over time (ofcourse targetting only 8-10 keywords at a give point of time) and also manage the PPC campaigns?

What are your suggestions?

This is really tough to say....

Dating is one of the toughest niches out there...Its right up there with weight loss, viagra and gambling....

Your SEO company has some valid points......

In SEO budget and success are often connected...Their comment on only being able to build so many links each month is flawed...you can build as many as you like as long as you stick with it month after month. If you build 2000 quality links this month you better follow up with 2000 the next month and the month after that and so on....be consistent.

Some keywords are 1yr plus keywords and it just takes time to get anywhere...you are not only trying to catch up to your competitors position today...you are catching up to their continued growth as well...

Make sure your budgets meet desired goals and you have the right time frames..Your SEO company should know within 2-3 month time span how long it takes to rank for any keyword.

To properly review their performance I would need more specifics.

    Hey @Vladworks!

Thanks for the insight! Does make sense what you are saying!

If I could give more specifics, they have brought the following keywords to the top:

    Keyword | Local monthly searches (India) | Google.co.in(the web)Rank
    Free dating | 60500 | 5
    Online dating | 40500 | 7
    Dating in India | 33100 | 3
    Dating India | 33100 | 3
    Free dating India | 6600 | 7
    dating online India | 4400 | 6
    India online dating | 4400 | 5
    Online dating in India | 4400 | 6
    Online dating India | 4400 | 2

And there are more 31 keywords we are aiming, with more traffic, which are yet to be listed in the top.

    Any insights?

All I can say is that they're doing a pretty good job for such a competitive niche. You've got some nice first page (first half page) rankings!
