I Need Help -- Link Insanity

I've been building links to my site for months in a variety of ways -- article marketing, video posting, blog commenting and also social bookmarking sites. I finally verified my site on Google webmaster tools and checked out the links that they have listed as going into my site and I was greatly surprised. I can't find one link from any of the social bookmarking sites (Digg, Delicious, Stumbleupon, etc.) at all. And, I've got 111,000 links from a directory site I've never heard of (or don't remember): the-monkey.biz. I also have 3877 links from article-niche.com which surprises me because I've built maybe 150 links from that site in total. And I've got 300 links from a site I've commented on twice. Anybody have any idea what's going on?

Backlinks take time to get indexed. Even when they are indexed Google typically will only show you 30% or so of what they actually have in their index. It is very hard to get accurate data regarding backlinks. rely on rankings.

Thanks for the help. Do you think I'm wasting time with the social bookmarking sites?

Google is notorious for under-reporting backlinks. One of my sites has 96 backlinks according to G, and over 11,000 according to Yahoo Site Explorer. These are legitimate links too, not low-quality profile links.

I have 8400 according to Yahoo and over 100,000 according to Google with most of those being from that strange directory site I mentioned. Can't figure that one out at all and I wonder what Google makes of it and hoe it affects my rank.

It usally takes 4-6 weeks more for your backlinks to get indexed now with google.
Keep an eye on your web server logs and check to see when the Google crawler bot accesses your site. I doubt there is a fixed or recognisable pattern for crawling times, especially considering the enormous number of pages that google indexes.

To be honest your time would probably be best served creating quality content that is useful to people or if you are promoting a service, make sure it is an appealing one.

That way people will link to your site content and your PageRank will go up which in turn will get you more visitors.

Oh and BTW Google really never shows you all the data

I can't find one link from any of the social bookmarking sites (Digg, Delicious, Stumbleupon, etc.) at all.
Those types of links are not very powerful anyway, in my humble opinion. They are, however, useful for syndicating your content. So, make sure that you fill your sites with valuable reader-centered content that people will want to read. Google rarely shows these types of links anyway, as far as I can tell.

I've got 111,000 links from a directory site I've never heard of (or don't remember): the-monkey.biz.
That looks like a pretty big directory site. Not sure how good the content is, but they have over 46,000 pages indexed in big G. Each page has some dynamic sidebars with information about recent comments and such. They look like they are probably on each of those 46,000 pages. Perhaps your site somehow landed in a sidebar and was seen by Google on a whole bunch of pages.

I also have 3877 links from article-niche.com which surprises me because I've built maybe 150 links from that site in total.
Weird stuff happens on article directories sometimes. Maybe your site was in a sidebar or something like that (kind of like in the monkey.biz directory). Google takes time finding links too. So, perhaps your link was circulating through the directory on summaries of related posts and Google gradually found it 3877 times - that doesn't mean that those links are still there. Or will be there again.

And I've got 300 links from a site I've commented on twice.
Maybe you were the top commentor and your username was shown site-wide. You can get tons of links from this if your username redirects to your site. Perhaps it was a new commentor thing in the side bar or footer of each page.

These are all from my own experience. I've had things like this happen. Just keep building up quality content on your site and the links will come. Remember, content should not be compromised for links - by that, I mean that you shouldn't spend all of your time building links while ignoring the fact that you should be continuously adding quality content to you sites.

Hope that helps a bit. Good luck.
