Link Directory Submission - Does it Work?

Hi Warriors,

What you say?
Does directory submission work?
Have you tried it?

If yes, how were the results?

If somebody manually submits his site to say 500 directories with PR1 to PR4...
what kind of restuls one can expect?

Why i am asking this! Well i used to think it is waste of time, but recently i have got
a guy in my team who raves about it all day long, he has even shown me some mixxed
results... so now i am thinking maybe Directory Submission is not that dead...so i look
forward to know your views...

It could be great link building source if it brings the results like indexed links with good
impact on rankings...

Thank you,
Mohsin

    Hey Mohsin,
Link Directory Submissions have lost their value overtime. Its best not to get links from spammy link directories and only go for valuable links.

      It still works. Proof?

Well with one older website I built backlinks with a phrase that was no where on my website. I used the phrase for the title in various directory submissions. The phrase is not searched much but it was just a test.

My site has continued to rank for that phrase even after two years.

So I'd say it would help for some long tail search but I would not spend to much money on it.

Also those bulk submission services usually go to directories where the links are never approved. I'd ask what the "approval rate" guarantee is with any service.

Yes it still does work but what you should do is submit manually to a handful of good web directories that have a real human reviewing each submission. There aren’t that many of them out there and links from those directories still count and produce trust in the eyes of Google.

Those links won’t pass any page rank for the most part but Google will assign a trust factor to your site if it’s listed in quality directories.

What are some of the good directories?:

    BOTW.org
    DMOZ.org
    Yahoo Directory
    Business.com

Always make sure that the category you are submitting to is indexed in Google. Just grab the url and paste it into search to see if Google indexed it. If yes, then obviously Google crawls that page and it would be beneficial to have your site listed there too.

Manual directory submission to quality web directories works well and you should do that for your sites.

I imagine it still counts as a link, but the value of it (in my experience) is close to zero. I have never seen improvements in my site rankings that I can attribute to link directories. It's also quite time consuming; much easier to blast out loads of links with AMR or use something like BMR or LinxBoss to get higher value links, I think.

That said I have not got any links in Yahoo or DMOZ, I've heard that these are the only ones that have any effect.

I'm not voting because I've NEVER done it before but from what I've heard it's not worth the time doing it.

I submitted links to boingboing.net but their navigation sucks! How do I find my submissions to ping them? Do they have to be approved also?

      Thanks!

What sort of directory? thats leaving a big open space that question I think.

For me article directory submission has gotten around 5 websites on page one, for god knows how many keyword terms, maybe 30+ ?

I think business listing directories are useless, but if you have some big ones in your areas they can be handy as they show up for local search terms.

I also think it works. I do manually Submission myself & had got good results.

I choose them with care & do the work myself & when I get status of my submission, I also ping them & check some days later at google if they are indexed. Till now I get the possitive results.
