Everyone is doing black hat link building

I was having a discussion with a business partner about what he thought was a good white hat link building strategy.
His argument was that he hates black hat link building that he would never do blog commenting and forum profile links, he looks at it as spam and he would never use software to gain links. I personally have nothing against black hat methods
He stated that he would use articles to get links and use private networks to be able to post his articles on with a link coming back to his site. He stated he would use social bookmarking, video syndication,article directories, directories and source out high pr sites that he can arrange to rent or arrange some sort of link exchange.
I have nothing against his strategy my argument is that every thing he mentioned is black hat, he might not be spamming everywhere to get links and using software to gain hundreds of links, but in the eyes of the search engines it is still wrong. Building any sort of links to your site is wrong, the whole propose is to get people to link to you naturally by creating link bait, that is the only white hat back linking method I know. I could be wrong but i believe almost everyone is doing black hat link building, I just wanted to know every ones thoughts on this and do they have a white hat link building strategy that does not include building links back to your site
