Curious about Google alert

Hi all,

I've been using google alert for quite some time, mainly set it to keyword of my blogs urls to find out if they appear on google search.
I set it to alert me "as it happens" so when a link grub by google I'd know immediately.

What makes me curious is that lately I'm getting alerts on links that I planted months ago,
and I'm not talking about links from directories but links from social bookmark sites, blog comments, forum signature, etc. The ones that should give me instant links.

Google alert says like this:
If you choose the "as it happens," we'll check for new results continuously and send you an alert whenever we find a new result.
Sorry for the long intro :p My question is, does google alert use the same method with method that google uses to find backlinks for PR calculation? (using bots/spiders)

I'm hoping web gurus can help me in my curiosity, thank you.

I also recently received pages of links from months ago. Sorry that I don't have an explanation though.

Many of you know that it was me, myself who created using Google Alerts for SEO purposes.

But that was when Google did it themselves, they farmed out the system to a third party. The results now are a wee bit old!!!!!!!

It is still the best and quickest way of page indexing.

I still use it, but I no longer use the premium account.

The best way to use Alerts is to set it up on keywords/ anchor text - find the sites that use the same system and do a 'theirsite' search and follow the linking system they have in place. Cheers David

Hi guys thanks for the replies,

Yup CTABUK, you did it, using google alerts is a genius way to find relevant sites for link building.

Yet what I really want to know is whether google alerts and google backlink calculation use the same method to find new indexed sites.

The reason for this is that if they do use the same method would you agree with me if I say link building in large amount (100-200 backlinks) per day is safe, since google wont pick up all those backlinks immediately.
The bots need time to crawl to find those links right?

    Can anyone confirm this?

I've had similar issues with Google Alerts. It finds old stuff as if it's new, and only finds a tiny fraction of what's out there. Pretty useless as far as I'm concerned. - Russ
