3 Things to keep in mind are Link Acceleration, Link Velocity, and Link Variety.

Link Acceleration: Build links at a gradually increasing rate. Don't suddenly blast your site.

Link Velocity: Keep the link building on for the long term. Months.

Link Variety: Get links from a variety of sources. Remember you're trying to be natural.

As for where to get links. Blog comments, article directories, web directories, forums, social bookmarking, social media, etc. There's tons of posts on these. Just be sure to keep in mind those first 3 things.

Could not have said it better myself!

The only thing I would add is that you need to keep in mind that backlinks that Google does not see, does not count! So take the additional effort to get your links indexed.

BUT this comes back round to "Link Velocity" mentioned above...If you build many links at once then build nothing for a while, then again build many links and so forth...then it would be better to leave your links to get indexed naturally. But if you consistently build links every day, or every other day...then by all means...get those links indexed.

Also i have seen amazing results by xRumer and Scrapebox blasting all my link properties. (NEVER BLAST YOUR MONEY SITE with these tools though, especially if your site is fairly new)

Another thing that I have seen pretty good success with is this:

      1. First create a video and upload it to YouTube - use animoto...and remember to watermark your URL in the video and insert the link in the video description

      2. Then create at least 10 to 20 web 2.0 properties with good quality content, that's related to your site..you can add 2 links to your site in this content...these should include Squidoo, Hubpages, weebly, wikia, wordpress, blogger etc...
IMPORTANT!! Do not use crappy one-button spin content. Use unique content written by you or a freelance writer which is then checked by you. The content MUST be quality!

      3. Embed the YouTube in the content!

      4. Blast all web2.0 properties with Xrumer and Scrapebox...

What tends to happen here is that the properties themselves gain some rankings and traffic, and your youtube video gets views and hence ALSO ranks and gets some traffic...AND you get some killer link-juice to your own site to help it rank too!

The best backlinking strategy is to build blogs/web 2.0s/high-pr directory articles linking to your site, and then blast those with as many tier 2 links as possible. Go here for a more detailed explanation: THE Backlinking Strategy That Works | The Smart Passive Income Blog

Although people have mentioned this briefly, one of the most powerful ways to get high quality backlinks is to negociate backlink exchanges with other competing websites.

    Why?

Because you get all the benefit from all their work, pointing to your website.

For example, if his website spent 100+ hours getting articles pointing to his site... then you benefit from that when you get a single link from his website.

    Leverage the work from others!

True, Eric, but doesn't the Reciprocity aspect of a link exchange kill the SEO benefits? What if instead you offered the website owner a free exclusive tutorial video on a problem in the niche? You can always tag your video with your website address and request a backlink from it as well.

You can do link exchanges, but make sure you're doing it with a quality site. Never link out to a site that has a whole page for just external links or "partner sites"... Google regards this as spam.

Oh, quick clarification... when I meant getting links from competitors, I didn't mean 1 to 1. (you link to him, he links to you)

Usually, I'll negotiate a deal that is beneficial to both parties.

For example, I'll give you 3 links from some of my smaller sites and you give me 1 link to my main site + I'll pay you $50 for the trouble. (Just an example, most of the time I don't shell out a single penny)

Then you get a one way link from your competitor

Creating backlinks is one of the most important tasks you can undertake to promote your website with the search engines. As far as i think the best link building strategies are:
Register the blog in Web Directories
Send a press release to a PR site
    Interchanged links with similar sites
    Squidoo lenses
    Submitting articles

Gosh, tons of ways to bring in links out there:

    - Article Marketing
    - Build Your Own High PR network
    - Press Releases
    - Forum Profiles (yep they still work, but not as effective as before)
    - Footer links on sites
    - Homepage backlinks
    - Social bookmarking
    - Blog commenting
    - Directory submissions
    - The list keeps going on and on......link velocity does help though....keeping links coming in at a regular interval instead of "blast it out" and forget it.

    Hi,

I was wondering if someone could answer a couple questions for a noob:

    1. GWT tells me that I have a 7.4 avg position for one of my keyword phrases but when I query in Google...I cant' even find it.

    2. I bought a niche blog template from an online place...well, some one else did as well...back in 2009, lol. Here's my issue. That blog has not been touched since posted back 09, ZERO content..nothing. So, why does he rank above me? wtf

    3. My site is bloggingdudes.com his site is dadzworld.com...it's not even lived in. I'm getting frustrated because when I first put my site up..it was ranked. Now, I have added 37 posts of fresh, original content...and it dropped off. I don't know wth is going on. Please help!

My backlinking strategy is incredibly simple. Purchase a few high PR domains, turn them into sites about the niche/KW etc I'm targeting, so they couldn't be anymore relevant to what I'm writing about. Rinse and repeat.

I don't bother with submitting posts to hundreds of social bookmarking sites, creating profile backlinks, creating web 2.0s, submitting posts to article directories etc. This isn't a matter or link velocity, diversity and all the other terms that are thrown about on this forum. It's simply because it's a hell of a lot easier to purchase expired domains, create some content, and then link back to your money site. A link from a PR4 /5 site is not only more effective than creating web 2.0s etc, but it also just takes an hour or so to create a site and it's unlikely that my site will be penalized.
