on-site optimization (keyword in the title, in the body of the article, in the first paragraph, etc.) + off-site optimization (backlinks, really. Their quality and quantity.).

Unless someone has done a case study on this that proves otherwise, which I doubt, no-follow links are of zero value. I would just do what actually works - getting DoFollow links.

Don't follow his last piece of his advice. It is rediculous. Get any good back links you can, nofollow or dofollow.

You also need to ensure that the keyword that you selected has huge demand but low competition from other publishers. If you key in the keyword in the Google.com search box and get result of less than 2,000,000 for me that is low competition. Having good keyword, with good on-site optimization + superb backlinking strategy, you can reach the first page fast.

It used to be heavily weighted on backlinks and it still is. The trend however is putting more importance on on-page factors. Social links are believed to play into things as well.

Do normal SEO. In SEO, ON page and Off page factor is there. Once you finished on page seo(Header should be H1 tag, proper title & meta tags, keyword related pages, both sitemap(HTML and XML) creation). Then you can build back linking for your website.Automatically your website will rank.
    thanks,

You can get ranking in Search Engines from doing Proper on page optimization and off page optimization. You can't get ranking from no follow backlinks. No follow backlinks are helping to increase traffic on website. if you want to come on top in Search Engines then you have to make Submissions in do follow High Page Rank Sites.

There are many factors that need to be considered if you want to get ranked in search engines. But the first thing you must remember is to follow search engines' guidelines specially in Google, because they are very sensitive when it comes to this factor.

This is also to help you avoid misconceptions in SEO and to keep you on the right track.

You need to do off-site and on-site and you need to do all types of link building as diversity will help you to rank even higher. At the end of the day a link is a link but all links are not created equal. A "natural" link profile would include all types of links.

You already have some great tips above...so to tackle one of your questions let me just add...

Nofollowed links do not pass any search engine ranking value for most of the search engines, including Google and Bing. You can have a nofollowed link on Wikipedia or even Google's main blog and it won't count in terms of improving your rankings. That doesn't mean the link is not valuable.

Sites with lots of traffic with links on them, even if they are nofollowed, still can send traffic. That traffic can help with leads, conversions and even encourage other sites to link to you without a nofollow attribute on the link. When it comes to getting links and social media, it is more about creating awareness about your content or product. That awareness will lead to more link building opportunities and create even more awareness for your content.

Your question is very general that nobody could give you the 100% all things to do to gain higher rankings in a simple reply. I would encourage you to take on a training course and really learn how it works.

Backlinking is incredibly important for improving SERPs. But you should also spend some time learning proper on-page SEO strategies.

When you combine solid, regular backlinking with good on-page writing habits, you'll see significant improvements in your SERPs. Keep in mind, that this all takes time. On-page is changes take effect fairly quickly, but off-page SEO could take days or weeks to even be seen by google, let alone take into consideration when deciding where they want to place you in the search results.
