I am interested if people seo for celebrity names or if this is infringing upon copyright laws? Any insight would be greatly appreciated, as I am new to internet marketing.

As long as you aren't stealing other people's content then you won't have much of a problem. Following current events (including celebrity trends) is a very powerful organic traffic technique and with a little SEO you can get results fairly quickly.

The question is what will you do with the traffic?

I sure do for the movie sites that I run. A lot of the times I focus on the movie name with the main actor or something like that. And obviously, fan pages do the same thing.

Getting high ranking for names are simple.

    Just get content,
    Spin,
    Post,
    And Create thousands of backlinks!

Major news events would provide great spikes in traffic if you did the SEO right.

Optimize for google images as well. People like to click on celebrity images!

It would be very wrong to use domains like www.jeniferlopez.biz, but www.celebrityninja.com/jenifer-lopez would be OK as they are in the media business and would be expected to be included on a site about celebrities.
