Question about Phrase Matching

Say I have two AdGroups,

One contains "blue widgets" and the other
"Buy Blue Widgets".

Doesn't this clash? Since "blue widgets" is included in the "buy blue widgets" phrase? Is it necessary to add a negative or does Google handle this already?
(Because "buy blue widgets" would actually trigger both AdGroups)

Go with the blue widgets...buy blue widgets will not help you... it is very specific and no one search for that.

you'd be surprised, I wouldn't completely write that off... I'd test the two with two adgroups, one keyword in each to split test the differences.

this was just an example. My point was that phrase 1 is contained in phrase 2, it could also be "best blue widges" or "blue widges review".

Both those longer tail phrases ALSO contain the phrase "blue widges"...so my question is how to handle this situation if you have an adgroup with a phrase keyword "blue widges" already.

      Hi G,

Generally Adwords will display ads for exact match over phrase match, and phrase match over broad match, provided they are in the same ad group. Of course, this assumes that your bids are the same for each.

If you have these overlaping keywords in seperate ad groups you can add a negative match or control it by varying bid levels. If you bid higher for exact it will take precedence over phrase match, bidding higher on phrase match will have precedence over broad match.

      Seperate Ad Groups:

      Broad Ad Group:
      my keyword phrase
      -"my keyword phrase"

      Phrase Ad Group:
      "my keyword phrase"
      -[my keyword phrase]

      Exact Ad Group:
      [my keyword phrase]

well i dont bid exact, this is for adgroups where there overlapping phrase keywords.
Question is whether i *need* the negative like -"nice blue widges" in the adgroup for "blue widges"....whether is necessary.

    by the way..

there is HUUUUGE potential using "intelligent phrase matching", at least as far as i understand.

    Example:

HIGH bids on common phrases like "buy blue widgets"

    HOWEVER

very low bids on "i buy blue widgets"

which first sounds like an odd search term.....but if you know that this triggers
    "how can i buy blue widgets."...."where can i buy b.w...." etc..etc..

With good phrase matching you can cover and trigger other phrases at far lower bids since your competitors usually dont think that far

Does google split the words. Say for this ""blue widgets". If somebody searches as one word bluewidgets. What happens?

You are betting spliting into specific groups because google will give your ads a quality score which relates to relevance, and this determines your cost per click.
