Does Google really give more credence to Edu domains?

I got this offer in my mail to rent an Edu domain for one dollar and it is rather tempting to try it...

RentYourOwnEDU

Does anyone believe that the Edu exploit is true as I don't want to waste my time?

Thx

    That's actually quite interesting thanks

I can 100% confirm that G loves edu domains so it is definitely worth a buck to try it.

I will be trying it myself so I will let you know what I think later.

Getting an .edu domain is so easy nowadays. So, I can't see the benefit sometimes.

I know the exploit used to be there, but I don't believe that it exists in the current algorithm.

CAVEAT: Scoring a link on an edu site used to have a lot of value, because those pages where your link might appear had high Link Popularity according to Google.

Since IMers invaded the edu space, there are many edu sites with absolutely no Link Popularity whatsoever, so an edu link these days in most cases is no better than a link on many splogs.

I agree with Bill. It used to work, but rumors are that schools got sick of being spammed so requested Google not give them any advantage.

However, I'm not sure this strategy will work for school sites, because it will depend on SEOers getting the word.

But...I'd still try to get a few decent edu links in my linking mix.

I don't think you have to sign up for that to rent the edu domain. Just like Onora said, getting an .edu domain is fairly simple these days. I found another thread that was providing a list of .edu wikis. You just go in, add your own link and you are done.

Having looked a little more closely it seems the "exploit" works because of offering top ten sites the chance to have their own edu backlinks and then getting them to link to your moneysite so it seems to be a "business opportunity" as much as an SEO strategy maybe...

Can these edu wiki links be aquired easily?

Not sure how you go about it (doh...) sorry being a little bit "blonde" today
