Like the title says.. I sometimes have trouble understanding how google ranks sites..
One of my money sites has been about pos #10 for some time now so I decided to create a free wordpress blog where I placed one article.. My idea was to start a linkwheel to promote the money site.. As part of this plan I bought a cheap fiverr gig to create social bookmarks for the free word press blog..
Guess what.. now the wordpress free blog is ranking pos #5 and my money site is still sitting at pos # 10.
The money site is PR 2 with hundreds of good backlinks.. PR2,3,4 and 5
Not complaining as I have seen a slight traffic increase to the money site.. but its just weird..
I thought maybe this was a momentary thing, but after 2 weeks the rankings are the same..
WEIRD..!

Dude, forget about trying to figure out how Google works and how their search algorithm works. I even doubt if the folks at Google actually know exactly how that works

Google is definitely a mystery at best. But it's a good thing. If people knew how to manipulate Google to a large extent, there'd be a lot more junk there than there is now.

Google like freshness in many cases.

Google is weird alright. Bing and yahoo are slogging
along and hope to be as weird as google.

Seriously. Why don't some of you send in your compuer
engineering resumes to google. Obviously, they are
sucking at profits now and need your help.

Google does not have to love your site or hate your
        competition.

The sooner people get over themselves, the sooner they can
work on attracting and getting visitors themselves instead
of whining how broken google is.

Just because google hates your site and loves another does
not make them broken. All it means is YOU are not doing enough
of the right things or your competition is just loved more. Period.
Google does not owe you a single thing, no matter how perfect you think
your site is and just know it is the best in the universe. That bad
        google.

Google algorithm don't know anyone. If we know that all of us do that to promote the site quickly, that affects the google.

Google is a trendsetter and that's why you'll never able to understand all of their strategies....new things will prop up when you least expected.

There are a few hundred factors Google are believed to use for ranking, but overwhelmingly it depends on:
    • content (well optimised helps, and that tends to mean "softer optimisation" since panda, not stuffed with keywords in bold text)
    • backlinks
    • domain age / authority
Since Panda, a lot of people myself included place more stowe in "quality metrics" like time on site, bounce rate etc. I have seen a lot of evidence of this making a big difference lately and have overhauled my own sites to make them more "sticky"... as opposed to gearing them up simply to drive clicks.

Hmm my free wordpress blog has no age or authority.. content is spun and not that special.. and it has some cheap fiverr backlinks.. yet its rating at pos # 5 for its respective keyword.. So I am not sure that the quality argument fits in any form.. Only explanation maybe because it is fresh or new..

First....Google loves blogs.Second :wordpress has a very good SEO optimization. And 3th:I think google become to banned link wheel.I have a blog that was on the second page in googlefor keyword "funny quotes".Because I want first page(of course),I spy my competitors .On the first page was a site:allgreatquotes.com and I saw that owner use the linkwheel for linkbuilding. I did the same thing. The results? Both(my blog and that site) are now on the nowhere in google...my posts are still in search results, but not my domain .that because google consider linkwheel like useless for visitors(to be honest...linkwheel is useless lol).So...be carreful

That's a very strange occurrence. I'd wait another couple weeks to see what happens. It might start to drop off eventually. You might also be penalized on your money site on account of too much of the same anchor text. Try mixing it up!

Just follow their guidelines and don't try to get too deep in detail, it would only confuse you. Simple things often produce results that can easily be monitored and tracked and you can always know what produced so-and-so result.

Yeah Google does some pretty crazy things. One day you'll be ranked for a keyword and the next you can be off the radar for no reason at all. Oh well!

  • Sounds kinda similar to my situation.

My main money site which I add content and backlinks to it regularly, is performing worse then one of my other sites, and it's a less competitive keyword.
