How long can a Micro Niche site last?

Does anybody here run micro niche sites that have been generating profit for more than 6 months?

What is the longest period of time that a Micro Niche site can survive and keep generating profit in case that it is well maintained with regular updates and backlinks?

I have no experience with MN sites but to me it looks like every MN site would eventually get destroyed by larger authority sites and we can't do sh*t about it.
Or am I wrong?

In other words: how much of a long term, reliable investment MN sites are?
Or are they just short-term "hit-and-run" tools?

I have some that are a couple of years old, but most make money off bing and Yahoo rather than Google. Its hard to rank mini sites in google now. I have been rebuilding a lot of my old ones that were profiltable buyt lost traffic to make "thicker" sites for Google.

My approach would be to build a lot of mini sites, then build out the ones that show promise into bigger rankable sites, and just use the others for link trading etc.

Yeah, it might be hard to rank those mini-sites in Google when going up against giant authority sites whose actual root domain is ranking on the first page for a particular keyword. However, if a giant authority site has only one of their PAGES ranking for a particular keyword, outranking them is incredibly simple.

I have a solid amount of micro-niche sites sitting on the 1st page of Google. The competition, on the other hand, is relatively easy to beat. Heck, probably 75% of the sites on the 1st page are either 1-pagers with horrible content or authority sites that have a page ranking with 0 backlinks to that particular page. All it takes is a few quality links and some good solid SEO optimized content to beat them out.

Of course, some niches aren't this easy. If you're going after a keyword like "weight loss", a micro niche site definitely isn't going to be able to carry the weight against those hard hitters on the first page.

      In other words:

      - Micro niche sites work well when targeting a very specific area within a certain niche
      - Authority sites work better when trying to target the bulk audience of an entire niche itself, touching on several "topics" or "ideas" within the niche itself.

My plan is to make sniper/micro niche sites first to earn some money (b/c they cost very little to make), and then use the money to build an authority site.

It all depends on the niche and competition. If the micro site is targeting a very un-competitive niche then there's no reason why it shouldn't last a very long time.

And what's with people saying ranking micro sites in Google is hard? I haven't had any problems ranking my sites in Google and keeping them ranked. This panda thing has everyone acting all dramatic about ranking sites.

What is that Panda thing? I hear people mentioning it, but I don't know what it is.
All i know is that it's something bad for rankings.

It's only bad for rankings if you have duplicate, unoriginal content or spun/non-sensical garbage on your site.

This is good news because I don't have any duplicate, unoriginal content or spun/non-sensical garbage on my site.
Still, I would like to know what Panda is. Know your enemy!

Panda was an update in Google's algorithm which penalized sites rankings for having duplicate/low-quality/spun content. ezinearticles.com took a huge hit, as well as sites like ehow, wikihow, etc.

Depends whether you're doing Black hat or whitehat seo..

I am doing white hat SEO, so I guess that Panda thing is nothing to worry about.
I was sure that Google can detect spun content! I just knew it.

If you spin the content correctly, how would they ever know it's spun content?

It depends on what you call "spinning the content correctly".
If it's just replacing words with their synonyms and then moving sentences around, then Google will have no problem detecting spun content and will penalize your ass.
If doing it "correctly" means radically changing the phrasing and the lexico-semantic structure of the content as a whole, rewriting whole paragraphs, etc - then you'd be better off writing your own original content instead - this will take you less time and will provide you with more chance on the Google battlefield.

It always comes down to you creating your own, original content.
I am a firm believer in this.

Hit-and-run is never good if you want to keep making money from online advertising til the end of your life.
Write, don't steal. It's really not that hard.

The best method for spinning is write two versions of each paragraph and put synonyms for every phrase/word that you can.

See, I told you - you'd be better off writing ONE paragraph of your own original content, than wasting your time spinning and trying to change TWO paragraphs of stolen content.

Just write your own sh*t. That's it.
It actually takes LESS time than spinning stolen articles and you end up with fresh, Google-friendly original content, not Panda-penalty-worthy spun crap.

Me, i have about 20 over Mniche sites, some are generating about $20/ month, some more than that, its been over 6 months for all my Micro niche sites now.

By survival do you mean, SEO rankings? If yes, It depends on your niche and the keywords your targeting obviously, i have many sites that are still ranking with very minimal backlinking efforts! As a matter a fact some of my sites only went trough a weak SEO campaign on the first month. Still ranking still earning

    Or am I wrong?

If this was the case you will no longer hear IMsuccess stories by newbies in the future. Fact is alot of this authority sites are ranking because of Google's "trust" but if you highly optimize your sites for a certain keyword or product name, you will outrank authority sites

MN sites are great investments as far as I'm concerned, I have some MN sites that hardly rank on the first page of Google for my desired keyword and still earn me money. Alot of my visitors found my sits trough various long tailed keywords and thats how I earn my money I recommend going for authority sites once you have enough money though

Quality is definitely better than quantity BUT there is a saying

"Quantity has a Quality of its own"

    cheers

You can definitely have niche sites receiving traffic for over six months. I do. It just depends on the content and your competition. If you add new stuff every once in a while, it'll definitely help at least a little bit.

    Thanks for the replies, guys.

So the bottom line is: MN sites are always a short-term investment, UNLESS you develop them into authority sites?
