I have an emd site, optimized on page Seo, comprehensive unique content, and a fair amount of backlinks. My site is on page 1 google about 5 spots below a site that doesn't have the searched keyphrase anywhere on the page (or source).

Explain this one please! Makes me think I'm wasting time...

Its probably either an authority site or a high PR page. The right backlinks beat out on page SEO any day of the week.

It's probably an authority site with lots of backlinks with the keyword in the anchor text. Anchor text is extremely important - search for 'click here' on google and you'll see what I mean.

      Yep, i totally agree here...

another thing that might be helping it rank so well is that it might be full of RELATED content...the socalled LSI keywords....this on top of an authority site could very easily rank for your target keyword

Not really authority seems more commercial ecommerce like. Competition domain is 6 years old.

You said you checked the source, did you check the Google Cache (text only version), it's not difficult for a webmaster to make content only show up inside the text only version of Google Cache.

Check the internal links on yahoo explorer, chances are they have some good on-page or off page seo/links.

The site may be an authority site or it may not have related keywords in the page but i has the terms somewhere else like the image alt attribute or the meta description. There are a lot of factors that may contribute to this and it is imperative that we look closely in order to decipher the competition.
