SocialBookmarkng total links question

I've heard (here) that we shouldn't add our link to a page that has more than
100 links on it. For example if our link ends up on a page with over 100 links per page then it's considered a link farm and will either get us:
  • zero link love
  • penalized some how, demoted in rank perhaps?
  • banned altogether
  • some combination of the above

I've been heavily using sharethis, addthis, socialmarker for my 50plus blogs...
On some of the social bookmarking pages I'm getting dangerously close to having 100 links.

Should I open a new page with those nearing the 100 mark?
I mean open with a different username?

Does my concern sound valid or am I afraid of nothing?

thanks Warriors

  • Nobody knows and everyones guessing, but hedge your bets and open several or just add extra pages to existing ones. And put some useful content on each page as well.

Interesting you suggested 100 links per page as the magic cutoff point, because most places used to say 30 links per page. Unless we take a Google insider hostage, we'll never know.

I suggest you err on the side of caution

Update... I just checked the majority of social bookmarking sites that I post to and found that even if we have up wards of 100 bookmarks, they seldom store all of our aggregated bookmarks on one page.

Most store around 30 and if we have more bookmarks on a site, the bookmarking site has a "next page" so my fears of our bookmarks being devalued in the search engines eyes were unfounded.

Well this particular fear was unfounded.

My competitors are copying me I see, I took the entire serps page and the guy who used to be #1 now has a 'addthis' button on his site.

LOL, I got the same feeling as you. I did social bookmarking on one of my services one day,
then the next day I saw lots of same services popped up on some social bookmarking sites that I used.

Social bookmarking is still valuable no matter what people say, I only find it helping with my rank and traffic.
Never caused me any trouble, especially not link farm issue.

David, your first post deals with links and your second talks about bookmarks. You lost me. I don't know a lot about social places but like craigslist has thousands of links, so would posting on cl hurt my rankings? They do show up on a search.
