Hi everyone. I have simple question does google punish inactivity?
In one of the trainings for seo i heard that google likes sites that show activity and vice versa. But in niche that i am starting in, top webiste have little or no activity. Number one site has bunch of links but second site(site that i am trying to beat) has around 600 links and almost no new content for couple of months. It does however have people people asking question every couple a day. So what is the verdict?
#google #inactivity #punish

As far as I know, Google doesn't "punish" inactivity, although it might reward new content. Most new pages get a temporary boost in the rankings. The purpose of this is unknown - it might be to check their click performance / usage statistics for future rankings or just that Google likes to display some fresh content once in a while.

Some niches need fresh content. Some don't.

How much fresh content does a site like cooltext.com have? None.

But they have ranked high for years in the niche.

Attaching a blog to your site can help. In more ways than one.
      Fresher content, backlinks.

But some sites you can set it and forget it.

Since in that niche all website are "static", should mine be also static? Should i then focus on building backlinks?

Google loves fresh contents, but it prefers quality contents much more. If you think your contents are qulity enough to beat #2, building backlinks would be a good choice for your outranking plan.

I have sites I haven't touched for YEARS and they are still ranking
top of Google. So, I would be quick to say NO, based on my

I would say no because my 'competitor' hasn't changed his website since 2007 and it still beats me in my choice phrase. It still talks, on the front page, about how there will be a memorial service in 2007. And yet, they are still high in the engines.

Although not necessary, the more quality content and quality links you build the higher you will rank. Big G won't punish you for not doing this, however your competitors who do will rank higher.

  • No, it doesn't. I still have some of my old blogs from 2005 and still manages to get into the number one spot in SERPS for their keywords. Google doesn't punish inactivity but highly rewards new content.

If your sites are getting continious links then fresh content might not be that bigger issue.

It may not punish it, but if all your competitors are updating, you're going to fall behind regardless.

If the home page is not touched except for a new link added to a new page in the site, would that be considered activity?

eg a review site that does one review a week

It depends on different things. For instance, if you've a site that has chat rooms what kind of updates you can add there? Probably none. So Google won't punish the SERPs of that particular site of inactivity.

Google doesn't punish inactivity but it prefer to websites with daily updated and increase in number of quality back links. So, if your website is inactive from a long and your competitors are giving daily updates to their websites, then they can beat you easily. so, it is advised to update website on regular basis.
