I just put a backlink to my site on a blog that was last cached on August 15. Does this mean that the last time Google crawled the site was August 15? And does this mean that Google won't know about my backlink until it crawls the site again? How can I get Google to crawl the site and update the cache page?

The cache page isn't necessarily updated when Google crawls the site. It's updated when Google caches the site. It usually does this once every two weeks for average sites, although high volume or highly dynamic sites might see higher cache rates.

You can increase your crawl rate in webmaster tools. This might help, but since it's on someone else's blog there's not much you can do other than maybe ping it and/or build links to your backlink. Your best bet is to just let it chill. Google will find the link naturally.

    It might have already.
