Regarding PPC ads, is there a way to track ROI
at the keyword level?

Do any of the ad networks allow this? If so,
which ones? (Adsense? Yahoo? etc.)

If the ad networks do not offer ROI statistics at
the keyword level, is there a piece of software
that you would recommend?

    You definitely can.

You don't need to use any ad networks directly to track conversions.

Any decent tracker can do this for you.
The process should work like this: You add unique tracking codes to each ad URL. That tracking code is stored in a database and this way you track visitors. Each time a visitor converts, the same code gets stored into to database to track conversion rates.

There might be another simpler way where the {keyword} tag just gets passed around from the moment a visitor lands on the site til the moment when he lands on the thank you page after conversion.

I think Free PPC Affiliate Tracking Software | Tracking202 and HyperTracker.com - ad tracker can do this for you. Poke around their site or shoot them a support ticket to make sure.

Yes, some cpa networks have a tracking pixel that's added to the vendors "Thank You" page that the customer is sent after they pay for the sale. Google's Adwords can do this I'm not sure about the others.
