Was I Google Slapped? Or Something Else.

I have a particular 2-year old niche site that I redesigned (using the techniques of Extreme Niche Empires which focuses on SEO), and at first I was amazed, because traffic shot up from around 20 visitors a day to 700-1000 per day.

It stayed like that for about a month, and I was enjoying a steady stream of adsense revenue for the first time on this site. Then all of a sudden Whap! It dropped back down to 20 visitors a day.

I've been scrambling to try to figure out what happened, I thought I knew, I tweaked and tweaked, but can't seem to get it back up to the high traffic.

I won't give anymore details, but in your opinion, what do you think most likely happened here? (I would ask in ENE Forum, but they took it down).

Well it sounds like you were ranking for a certain phrase that was getting a lot of traffic and then the listing disappeared. Were you tracking exactly what phrases people are finding you under?

This happens all the time, keep building the site with unique, quality content and you will get your listing back in time.

I agree with what Chris said above. Keep adding content regularly and throw some high quality backlinks at it and it should come back better then ever.

It might take some time but keep at it.

Thanks Chris and Rich. That was my first thought, and I did find the phrase and post that was getting the most traffic in my stats area.

Yeah, I did try to re-rank for that by building a page dedicated to that phrase, re-pinging it, but that didn't work. I'm guessing I was unknowingly on page 1 for that keyword (as I didn't really check while it was doing well). Now I see that I have 3 pages for that keyword ranked on page 5. I may have just gotten lucky, because I wasn't even trying to rank for that particular keyword (it was something from an autoblog post).

I'm wondering if I should even bother trying to re-rank it. Well, I'll see what I can do. Any other comments would be appreciated.

You can try to re-rank. Back links to those pages would definitely help.
