I was wanting to do two things with this thread:

1- Find out the SEO tools, software and programs that will help me personally.

2- To build a list here that we can all add to. This list can be used as a foundation for all current and future SEO's.

Tools can be defined as; software, websites, free and paid, programs, courses and reading materials.

Ill kickstart it with something I use all the time:

WebRank Toolbar - Pagerank, Alexa, Compete and Quantcast Rank, Pages Indexed and Backlinks Checker by ProbCOMP

Add to Firefox

Rated 4 out of 5 stars 32 reviews

I also have some other software, but to be honest its not all taht useful.

For the basis of all keyword research I would throw in the free External Keyword tool from AdWords:

Should've listed this in the first response but Google Webmaster Tools is the holy grail of all site analysis from a SEO point of view in my opinion:

This is great so far. How do you guys use webmaster tools for clients though?

And we as well add analytics.

I approach SEO work for clients with a two pronged approach.
The first is to help them rank highly for competitive keywords which I find that are related to their industry/product/service. The second is customer education for the SEO work I do.

The latter is an overlooked approach I feel within the industry. Too many unscrupulous firms offer clients unsubstantiated promises and then fail to deliver. It's important to educate clients that a lot of time and work needs to be put into SEO campaigns. By this I mean that blasting a load of links to a site and changing some title tags is just not enough these days.

Error reports within Webmaster tools highlights accessibility issues such as broken links, duplicate content, page load speed problems, etc.

By providing clients with an insight into these problems and how you are working to rectify these allows them (the clients) to have a greater appreciation of the work you are doing and the actual amount of work required for a SEO campaign to be truly successful.

Most of the data within Webmaster tools can be exported as reports which makes it easier to keep clients informed with consistent information on an ongoing basis.

simply give them your gmail id and ask them to add you in to their google web master account aswell as analytic account.
or create a new account for them and add their id . SO they can see what is going on .

I like Advanced Web Ranking for tracking my google rankings. I use the enterprise version, but it is $399, so out of the price range for most people starting out. But they have cheaper versions.

I would suggest to add Search Status plugin as this has all the features that a SEO will need for his purpose like it shows meta tags, keyword density, whois, robots.txt, sitemap.xml etc and many others. I have been using it for long and found to be very much useful.

I have seen people offer their SEO services with an offer similar to this

    1. you pay us x dollars per month (it was not more than 100 per month)
    2. we will guarantee you google number one position
    3. you choose the kws

I thought WTF, nobody can guarantee that
why people fall for that, I guess must be newbies

I know one very popular one , very well known one that charges like 250 bucks a month you dont rank you dont pay , but supposedly they choose the kws and they choose very easy low traffic kws, and get you to . not sure what position

Open Site Explorer is pretty much essential. I use all the SEOmoz pro tools, plus Market Samurai for keyword research. Xenu Link Sleuth can be handy too for spotting structural errors.

I'm sure there's more, but I can't think right now...

Good firefox addon... Search Status is also a popular and effective Webmaster Addon. Sem Rush is also a good one. SERP Analytics is another great tool for SEO... not many of the users know it... but it is a very helpful tool.

I guess I am a non-traditional SEO by the looks of what people are posting in this thread. I do not let Google Webmaster Tools anywhere near my sites. Same with Google Analytics. They have enough information. I'm not going to spoon feed them more.

Two tools I can't imagine working without are SEO SpyGlass and Scrapebox. These are fantastic for finding good sources for backlinks. I do not use Scrapebox for any commenting. But I do use it for a ton of other stuff.

I don't want to divert the conversation, but, Mike Google's already crawling your site. It has all your information. It sees your whois record. It sees and tracks your visitors already. Why not make sure you're getting it to do what you want?

yeah, out of the dozens of SEO toolbars for firefox, this is the one I use. Some of them just have too many info bars or checkers on them, looks like clutter.

One website I recommend to check keyword positioning is Google Checker - KRANK. You have to make an account but it's free, and you can track your keyword rankings up to 200 places, and you can also change the country you want to search rankings for.
