Anybody else experiencing incredible Google dance?

Hi, I've been noticing huge jumps in my ranking in Google.

One site was between #12 and #13 for almost a year. Then recently, after some heavy link building, it got to #6 but dropped to #8 after a few days. Then two days later it was #13 to #18 during the day, ending on #67 in the evening. The next day it was not in top 100 and that remined for 4 days. On day 5 it returned to #9 and during the day dropped first to #13 and then off the top 100. Now for a few days it's been jumping from first to second to 10+ page in the results.

Does anyone know what's going on? Should I be worried?

Is there anything that can be done?

I have a fairly big site with 100% unique content (many sales letters).

Thanks for any input.

Just keep building more links and avoid on page optimization, you'll be safe. For about another 1 or 2 weeks, your site will bounce back and rank a lot higher, may be top #1 position.

Depends on how you are building links. If you are abusing the anchor text, you could end up being penalized.

The Google dance is one of the strangest traits of the search engine, it's unpredictable and totally insane at times. I have websites (albeit fairly new) that sometimes will do the dance and others that literally refuse to (most of them using the same backlinking methods).

So yeah, Google is crazy, but keep building backlinks and you'll be just fine. The worst thing you can do at this point is stop building backlinks. Stick at it, be determined and make some cash!

I don't think this is Google dance. I started seeing a lot more of these fluctuation after the Google Panda updates, especially when my websites were on the first page.

Long gone are the days when your website would be at its ranking or position for weeks or months. For me, my websites change ranking almost every day. I often see changes based on my backlink building. When I stop even for a day or two, my rankings will drop.

There are times when my rankings drop a lot even after a lot of backlink building. But it's something I have to live with.

I have a 2 year old site that just dropped from the face of the earth. Many of my keywords are on page 1 but now they are rank 900 something. I thought at first it was google dance but now I think the site is being penalized. For what? I don't know. I have unique content that is converting really well. My backlinking is actually pretty slow, around 10 links a day only. It has been over 2 weeks now since it happened and my keywords are not budging from purgatory. This seems to be happening a lot lately (from what I've read from other forums) and its quite depressing fighting the unknown.

Mostly i hear Google Dance will be good news because one you put more effort in those few days by doing more quality backlink and put more quality content . Then you will able to stay on the high PR.

I won't call it Google Dance, rather unstable rankings.

Since you website is having a tough time in getting its position... You should primarily focus on your home page optimization and promotion.

Optimize the content, keywords, titles and all other important elements.

Submit your Sitemap to the search engine.

Then, try to get QUALITY backlinks for home page...
Incorporate Social Media Optimization in your strategy.

Also, keep monitoring your competitors and your efforts to see any improvement.

Yes and I think there might be others out there who are experiencing what is going on out there or they may be too busy to notice what is really happening to their sites.

I think the main reason is the uneven distribution of link building efforts, you should do link building continuously to avoid the drop in your site. Try to incorporate fresh and unique contents in your website too.

This is correct. I have found the extreme importance of CONSISTENCY in SEO. My rankings dropped from the Top 3 to the 3rd page overnight because I stopped making backlinks for a few days.

      It pays to be consistent.

Of course you do.. or build an authority site where others do it for you. If a website just suddenly stops getting linked to, it will naturally fall from the rankings of the position it was in based on those backlinks.

Same thing is happening to me.

I was sitting pretty with #1 positions for a dozen pages on my site. On Friday ALL pages fell about 50 spots. I don't know what's going on but this is very frustrating. I'm going to keep building backlinks daily and not change anything though. Hopefully the positions will return.

Google seems to be dancing wildly and excessively these days...

What gets me is that I fell 50 spots from #1, and when I analyze the competition, I see all these brand new pages ranking in the top 5 -- most of them are really poorly designed and look like they were slapped together by a college student sitting in a dorm room.

Google is nutsy. I had a site on page one now on pages 5-7. Either it is a back link overoptimization penalty or the dance....

It might just be that your competitors are on to you and are building their own backlinks while lurking in the shadows. Its pretty common to jump around a bit. I'm not sure about going from page one to page 50 ...that's a big jump but I have had sites disappear from google and a few days later they are back without any effort on my side. Very frustrating.

I reckon the "Google dance" is Big G's way of testing your website's bounce rate on that particular ranking, meaning after a few days on that rank and your bounce rate went up due to .. I don't know.. maybe your website is not the one the searcher is looking for in that particular query... and your bounce rate went up so Google placed you on a lower ranking.

    Just my two cents though.

In your experience, how long does google dances? :-)

My client's site is on 10th page (before number 4-6 spots) for about 2 months now. I did not stop building backlinks and still waiting. Are we still waiting for something - or do something else already?

    Thanks... :-)

Sorry I couldn't help but laugh while reading some of these posts. Simply because I, of course, are experiencing the same things on some of my sites too.

But what made me laugh was the comment about the websites or pages that took my place look like some college dormroom student slapped together a website real quick and is hitting #1. Because that was EXACTLY what I thought on some of my keywords that I was ranking #1-3 for.

How could these crappy looking, bad content, 3 paged, unoptimized SEO, 200+ unrelevant link packaged site be ranking #1?????

Google make up your freakin mind! Do you want good content with related links or not??

If so, then put my site back where it belongs!!!

Yeah i have been having the same problem, my site dropped from number 2, to number 11. I know its not as bas as some other people but still, it does get frustrating. I guess just keep building backlinks, and add relevant content.
