    Of course. Why would you want to add a link to your own site that links to an unrelated, irrelevant site? It will just make your own site look spammy.

    Its just as important as the content on your site.
    For examply, would you want links to a "loose weight quickly" site to come from a "Solar Panel installation" site? Nah, you want links from recipe sites. :-)

    Think of backlinks as recommendations. I heard a great analogy once but I forgot where.

    Imagine you are sitting at a table where there are 10 people, so someone ask who's the best at Java programming, and 8 out of 10 people points there fingers at you. So you get 8 votes for Java programming, so you must be really good at Java programming.

    This is the way Google looks at backlink. So in response to your question, an irrelevant backlink will be someone who is not at the table, or someone who doesn't know the guy he's pointing at, you cant take their recommendation seriously. The vote has no value. Get it? :-)
