how effective is SEO anymore?

As I had stated previously, I had a small but growing amazon affiliate marketing business that really relied on Article Marketing (I used tools like Article Marketing Robot)

My biz was greatly affected by Google's "Farmer Update".....

shortly after this update I had to take a few months off from my marketing business to make time for a new job.

Now I'm back...and...I'm at a loss on "how to pic up the pieces"

I'm not wondering if SEO (organic traffic) is no longer practical to obtain...

Wondering if I should focus more on PPC strategies to gain targeted traffic?

Any ideas???

If you think you can definitely make more money than your paying for ppc, then go for it. Make sure you have good click through rates though so you don't lose money to google

did you know that all your links in your sig file go to a parked page (your sites are not live anymore).

i think the best approach is to give google what it wants - fresh and relevant content, frequent updates, diversified backlinks - don't give up on what you already have built, just stop new projects and bring the exisiting sites back to life.

      ya...i was aware of this...
I am starting from scratch....i have way too many sites (18)

Because i work a lot of a hours at my...j-o-b....i can no longer, effectively service all these sites.

I have decided to focus on one or two higher paying websites that are more targeted...(all the while trying to build an email list....which I've never tried before.

i have yet to take these sites off...will soon.

        Hi derh,

My advice would be to not to give up on SEO, but instead adapt to the changing environment. If you were hit by the "Farmer Update" (a.k.a "Panda Update") then your content had quality issues.

You could do either of the following:
        • Update your previously created content to higher quality standards
        • Start fresh with higher quality content

From what you stated your methods were working up until your content got dinged for poor quality. Just continue with higher quality content and you'll be back in the game.

While you are at it, give PPC a try as well. If your SEO campaigns were profitable then your PPC campaigns should be equally as profitable, if manged properly. Bear in mind that ad quality is just as important to PPC as content quality is to SEO.

If you were affected by Farmer update, then something wasn't right on your site or in your link building techniques.

    TIP:
Try to focus more on the quality of content on your site and in the articles you market. When I was learning SEO; rule No. 1 was: quality is always better than quantity. So try to write something original and unique.

    Hope it helps.

PPC is never a bad option, just as long as your site is converting that traffic and you know what you're doing to bring in only the highest targeted traffic you can get. People ready to BUY right now.

You have to be extremely choosy with your keywords. If they're not buyers keywords, DONT bid on them, you'll be wasting your money.

SEO isn't dead at all but a lot more is starting to rely on the social aspect of things, srtuff like the +1 button and comments on your blog are starting to have an affect on your rankings.

Having said that if you are sharing good content then that sort of thing should come with time as people share your stuff...

I had some things affected by the update too, but every single one that was penalized had way too much auto posted content so they deserved it, that isn't my business model as such but the while fact that they are set and forget means they were beavering away without me doing anything so I didn't take them down...

Typically what others do with a new website to generate traffic or leads to is to use PPC at the beginning, however you have to be very careful as the PPC campaign can eat up all of your profits, I am not a big fan of PPC unless you are doing it for a big company with a big advertising revenue and good branding.

The organic search results take more time and you have to build your site up gradually and the traffic over a period of time can increase. For example, if you target the Keyword "seo" then you have a potential of 9 million viewers for that keyword alone, however you will need hundreds of thousands of backlinks, good content, all available offpage seo methods to reach the first page alone for the keyword. Your goal should be keyword study and your target audience, because it is proven fact that people click more on the organic search results than on the paid advertisements.

Think of it not as "worthless" but as what no longer works. Maybe just focus on one of your sites you believe has the best income potential and then start adding some fresh content...then some fresh backlinks and see what happens. Good luck!

From what I'm learning about SEO I would say it's very much alive and a great way to gain traffic. It is easy to lose money, quickly, with PPC, I certainly have. But I know others who use it regularly and profit.

If you learn SEO you will not only benefit for yourself but will also gain a marketable skill.

SEO is not dead, it just takes much more time to rank up than it used to. Like everyone else has said, the best traffic will come by delivering quality content. Google keeps updating their ranking system and there is one major trend: quality content is being ranked above lower quality content.

Indeed, it takes more time because there are so many websites popping up on each and every single day. The Internet is not the same as it was 2-3 years ago. The population in the world is growing on a daily basis and so is the Internet likewise.

If PPC is affect for you and you are getting good result then surly PPC is most quick way of getting search engine traffic. It really depends upon the income which are getting from your affiliate program. If you are getting good amount then surly little expense wont be matter.

SEO is certainly not dead. Think of this. if you asked your mate to write you an article and upload it to your blog about lets say "whats the best coffee", do you think it would rank for the keyword "Best coffee"? I think not.

Of course if you have a coffee site that is a few years old, has authority(in bond links/good PR) and "people" reading, linking and talking about your article then yes it would rank naturally.

Since your site is new (or should I say now only creating high quality pages) you will need to write a high quality article about the best coffee. When I say "high quality' I dont mean a typical article that will take you an hour to write, but one that is researched, links out to your references (authority sites) and then you build links as normal to this page. If you ask me everything about link building remains the same post panda (link from high pr, related sites), but the foundation (site content / site itself) must tick all the boxes or the SEO will not be as effective.

Sounds like you need to diversify your link building. Get working on different types of links and of course make sure you have good content. Sometimes when link building is not as effective I have seen movement in the SERPS by just adding some good content.

Article directories themselves were hit a lot by the farmer update so this could have lowered the power of your links so also would have hit your sites.

  • hi,
I think first you should try increasing traffic on your website by submitting links, posting articles, blogs. And still if you are not satisfied with the response then you can try ppc. But i think normal SEO will still work.

PPC is the best way to go.

SEO is still alive but there is no guarantee that it will eventually work.
They are many professional SEO service providers out there, so now is left for you to choose the person who is going to use a better techinques to rank your site.

To identify were problems are comming from put in the best high quality content/acticle and you are good to move.
