How Can I Reverse Engineer The Linkbuilding Of My Top Competitor?

My top competitor has millions of links... it's an authority site.

I want to reverse engineer the backlinks that I can get that they have.

But...

I want only the high PR pages and from relevant pages.

Is there an easy way to filter those things out using software?

Or do I manually have to look at 2 million links? lol...

Yes, you can do that with Market Samurai, you click on SEO competition and then when the results are loaded, you click on the little arrow next to your competitor's website and click on "PR analysis", it will show a list of about 100 backlinks sorted by PR from high to low. You can open all these URLs in your browser and see if you can get the same links.

      Thanks for the info.

Is there any way to get a bigger list than 100 using that feature of Market Samurai?

Because we're talking about filtering through like 2,000,000 backlinks.

I'm not really sure about the number, 100 was just an example, but I think you won't get more than 1000 URLs this way.

What you can also do is put your competitor's domain name into the Yahoo site explorer and download the results as a .csv file, then you can visit all the URLs from your excel sheet, however, they won't be sorted by PR.

I've used Site Explorer to find out they have over 2,000,000 backlinks... and that's pretty darn intimidating to go through lol

So I'm just trying to cut that list down to relevant + high PR pages using technology so I can go through them after that and see if I can get the same links.

What you can also do is view the backlinks for the other sites/pages you are competing with in the SERPs, you can do it exactly the same way as I pointed out above with Market Samurai, this way you could get thousands of URLs to examine.

"The Kraver" put out a free WSO on using SEO SpyGlass to reverse engineer any sites backlinks. Of course 2 million is a bit much for the free version lol
Anyway, I can't post links but just google "Unlimited high pr backlinks" and look for it. It does work! however I've had no luck finding sites I can leave a link as well so far.
            Good luck to you!

    Another vote for Market Samurai.

If you want to do it for free, OpenLinkExplorer and ahrefs give a small-ish list of the top links.

Scrapebox and SEO spyglass is what I would use. If you want me to help you do this, send me a PM and we can sort something out.

MS is horrible for this. SEO SpyGlass is your best option. Nothing is going to help with relevancy, but it will tell you the PR and let you sort it ad well as tell you if the link still exists. In addition, it will give you the number of outgoing backlinks on the page so you can prioritize the best ones.

SEO SpyGlass is probably your best bet but if you do not have it you can use Yahoo Site Explorer (soon to be discontinued) coupled with the SEO Quake plugin for FF.

Just configure SEO Quake to reflect PR, switch it on and then analyze your competitors links with Yahoo Site Explorer... this will display 1000 links plus the PR of each link... the 1000 limit wouldn't suffice for your purposes but the good thing about YSE is that it shows the higher quality links first.
