How do I find page rank and back links for a page I do not own?

Much of the literature I've been reading will say "find the number of backlinks a competitor has and that is your goal"

i know it's Duh question. But I don't know how to find page rank or the back links on a page I don't own.

I tried search, but find information of the importance of BL's not how to read them.

  Actually I tried the plugin before I made the post. It had my firefox so messed up I had to install a new profile. Strange things started happening as soon as I installed it. I don;t really want to try it again. Thanks though

  and to see backlinks, on google, type link:domain.com
  
  that will only show a small percentage of backlinks though, but they are generally higher quality
  
  you can just google the site's URL and you should be able to find a lot of the backlinks
  
  there's also tools you can buy to accomplish this stuff

You could check out backlinkwatch.com to check out your competitor's backlinks.

Market Samurai uses Majestic SEO for the backlinks and the pagerank is really not a big deal, there is a firefox plugin that i use...

Google Tool bar to check page rank - and download a copy of SEO Spyglass - type in the competitors domain and it will return every where the site has a back line... Pretty kewl software. I've been using it for several years.

Its not necessary that you build back links only on sites, your competitor has. Most important is building theme based links from some quality sites. Theme based links from high pr sites are very helpful in improving search engine rankings.
