How hard would it be to knock a PR5 page off the #1 spot ?

Having the keyword in the domain will definitely give you an advantage. Knocking it off the number one spot will be pretty tough and will take some time. You would have to update the content on your website regularly and get some good quality incoming links to your website.

A well established will be hard to knock off even with keyword in your domain name. It can definitely be done but would need concerted and consistent effort.

Buying a new domain and competing with the top listing is not a very good idea, even with the keyword in the domain name. Google would always give preference to the older website, everything else being constant. If you have an existing website then using it to get to the top (provided it is in the same domain) would be a better option in my opinion.

I won't be counting on that, I beat up my competitors who use keywords in their url with .blogspot.com with no keywords in it.

Hi dogisland,

There are many factors that go into the ranking algorithm. If you're looking at only couple of factors to decide whether to compete, you could be missing the boat.

There are many websites, with little or no PR, that beat PR5 sites in the rankings. There are many websites that have only a handful of backlinks that beat other sites with hundreds of backlinks. In fact a single well placed backlink could be worth more than thousands of free-for-all backlinks.

Simply looking at the PR and the count of backlinks tells you very little. If you look at the overall job they have done in optimizing the site, it will give you a much better idea of what it will take to beat them.

Look at how well they have structured their internal links as well as the location and relevance of their backlink anchor text. Then calculate what it would take for you to do a better job for your own site.

well getting domain of your keywords will surely help you but do not rely on a single keyword as promoting site with single cannot get much traffic.......also keep your keyword in the title tag.....

Pr5 doesn't mean a great deal in serps , i have seen numerous times where lower pr pages beat a higher pr page in the rankings, from googles point of view it will probably be down to content, age etc of the site and backinks, also a pr 5 site may well have more than 200 links, google, if that is where you checked, doesn't always show all the links, do some backlink analysis and see what type of websites the backlinks are coming from and the anchor text used, that will give you a better idea of how to get to the no 1 spot

buying the domain for more then only a year will help google see you as a "ill be around for awhile" site.

might pay to do a 5 year reg in such a case!

200 backlinks is definitely not a large obstacle to overcome. I would suggest consistency and some good fashioned article writing will get you there in no time.
