I just wanted to share an interesting story.

I was checking a Google adsense site that I have not done anything with in the last two months. I set it up in May and did a tiny bit of backlinking to the site, but pretty much left the site alone.

It now has a pagerank of 4 and is getting close to the first page for the domain keyword name.

Another site that I use for my services is a PR 3 and I do very minimal seo work on.

The final site is my blog, where I have over 500 articles to the site and according to Google Webmaster close to 20000 backlinks. It is a PR 2.

What the heck man? The What the heck?

Just wanted to share!

Andy

There are many factors that could affect this, how old is your blog? Are those articles unique? Are the backlinks relevant?

It does surprise me though how your other websites have reached PR 3,4..

All of my articles on the main blog are unique. The ones on the PR 4 is somewhat unique.

The backlinks are very relevant on both sites.

I double checked it myself, because I thought it was a mistake myself.

    PR is over-rated these days.
    Think about selling it.

I think it is normal for a website to have a boost in PR when it has only a few pages. The reason is that, the juice acquired by the homepage is only distributed a few times within the site's inner pages. In fact, I have a blog with less 20 posts and got PR 3 homepage with only a few backlinks. And like you, I haven't updated the site the time I reached 20 posts. More interestingly, I bought a new domain, set it up with blogger, and it automatically got PR0, no backlinks, no posts, just a plain, unattended homepage with only the header title as the text. I am the first own of the domain, and it's keyword domain.

I've seen this happen to a few of my sites and it usually happens when the site is in a very low competition niche.

I agree with Stephan. If it isn't currently making any money it may be wise to flip it for some quick cash.

      Phil,

I have not flipped that many sites. How much can you generally (understand an exact number is impossible) get for a PR 4 site. For the keyword it is ranked 14 right now and has been steadily moving up to the first page.

Google has aggressively downplayed the importance of PageRank for sometime.

I think we should not get obsessed with it. PageRank is an important factor but it is also one out of 200 signals they have to be used in ranking though it is an important one for a large number of queries, we must not get obsessed with it of course must neither ignore it.

If I had to keep a single rank to evaluate how successful is the online presence of my business, then PageRank would certainly NOT be the one that I would choose. I would focus more on the actual sales, the conversion rates or the relevant traffic that I receive.

I had done tons of backlink and internal linking as well. But PR doesn't seem to do good. Probably we should ignore and focus on SERP instead

Hey, PR still matter. If you have website which has as low as 0 to 2 Page Rank and if you are competing with the website of PR 5 or more. You will never being able to defeat your rival. Especially if those high PR website is properly optimised, you have to prepare a long term SEO plan.

Basically this is a Google dance. Google show your website in first position and want to know what is the behaviors of visitors for your website. after that Google judge right page for your website.

Its the quality of the backlinks instead of the quantity.

Often times sites that have thousands and thousands of backlinks are sites that have very low quality links, and thus produce lower PageRank.

I know of one site that has 60,000 backlinks and is a PR2, while another has simply 20 and is a PR5.

Why? The one with 60,000 is blatant spam and the one with 20 are from higher quality .gov, .edu, and other amazing domains.

When I found the title of this thread, I thought that I would see someone that will set right to the misleading concepts about PageRank because of what its strong title says. But when I start reading the posts, then I realize how literal the title is. It really is funny after all!:p

And, here are my favorite posts that really makes me laugh out loud!

  • Page Rank ranks PAGES!!!

The formula for ranking is not solely based on volume.

What is clear here is that most people do not understand what PAGE RANK is or how it works.

Page Rank is not a guarantee of traffic.
