Question about backlinking and Sig Files

I currently (as of this writing) do not have a link in my sig file.

Lets say, for instance, I start promoting product XYZ and decide to put a link to a landing page in my sig.

It seems like this will create a whole bunch of backlinks to that page instantly. For me, that's only 150 links - will that raise Google's eyebrows? How about the folks on here with 1,000 or more posts - do you guys have a problem with excessive backlinks when you change links in your sig files?

Just wondering...

I don't think you'll find that it would count ALL of them when they are from the same domain.

It would still count as long as the pages are already cached in Google's database. If you have an old WF post on "Product XYZ" and you change your sig to "Product ABC" as long as your previous posts were cached, it would still be counted as a backlink.

  • It doesn't matter if you create 10,000 links in a day. It matters where they come from.

Clearly 10000000 links from the same domain means nothing to Google. It's not like they haven't figured this out.

What if you have a story that goes viral on Digg? You could end up with more than 10,000 links in a day. The same with Facebook or any other large social property.

Worry about what you can control. If it makes sense to ad a link in your signature file then do it. Don't worry so much about SEO, worry that the link in your Sig File is actually worth visiting for the target audience.

I don't think there is any issue in getting backlinks from forums... First thing, you cannot post 150 replies in day.

Second thing, you don't get all your backlinks indexed in one day.

So don't worry about flooding of your link graph with forum links.

Well you are overthinking this, because not all of those links will be indexed right away anyway, so will not all be instant. Some might not be indexed at all. The search engines are smart and a lot of individuals use forum signatures to link to various websites, some have thousands of posts.

While a forum signature link can help you with SEO, do not expect a lot of results from having a lot of links from one website. You are going to want to use a variety of sources for the best results.

Even if all of your signature links were to get indexed immediately I do not think that you have too much to be worried about my friend.
