I have relatively new to the SEO game and I wanted to know how the experts determine the search volume for local search. It is easy to find out how many search for a keyword phrase such as "custom suits" but I cannot get any search volume numbers for a search term such as "custom suits st. louis" does anyone have any advice as to how to get this information?

Related to this question, I wanted to know if your example "custom suits" was a relatively good keyword to optimize for (high volume, low cometition) would it be better to optimize for the more global phrase rather then to optimize for the phrase with "St. Louis" included and if yes, will it automatically improve the local rankings as well?

I m using Google Adwords keyword tool for the best keywords with high search volume and low competition. For better results, you can optimize both global and local keywords.

If you do not have enough budget, I suggest that you are start optimizing a low competitive keywords with enough search volume. I would include the city and state on the title, site content and footer.

I also use Google adwords and set it to country that I'm targeting, you can also use google trends to see the trending for such keyword.

        Hi mgordon,

The Adwords Keyword tool isn't that granular. It shows local search volume down to the country, but not down to individual cities states or regions.

The best way to get that data is to fire up an AdWords campaign targeting the keywords and specific geographic area you want to target. Be sure to set a sufficiently high maximum bid and daily budget, many times greater than what you anticipate, to get the full picture. You will have a very accurate picture within a short period of time.

I highly recommend this technique for anyone considering a major SEO campaign. You can get lots of useful data that guides your SEO efforts toward maximum effectiveness. You can quickly get search volume, test headlines and ad text for use as page titles and description snippets for your organic campaigns, and effective conversion rates down to the individual keyword level.

It's also great for testing and tweaking your landing page elements for optimized conversion rates, before you spend a small fortune on a major SEO campaign targeting totally untested landing pages.
