Seo Suggestion, Ranking Issue

Here's my situation.
I have been building backlinks to the home page of my site, and was making steady progress climbing up the Google ladder for the keyword phrase I was targeting for my home page.
This morning, upon checking my rank, I am now ranking higher for an inner page that is more specific to the keywords I am targeting than my home page is. Following so far?
My question:
Should I stop pushing for home page backlinks and directly target the inner page that is more relevant to the keywords I am targeting? Or do I continue to add backlinks to my home page? Cheers.

Don't only target your main page.

Depending how your website is constructed ( which platform; wordpress, html, etc ) you can make it so that pages help other pages rank in the SERPs.

If the inner page is more relevant for that keyword then you should honestly have been trying to rank that given page in the first place.

If your site is SEO optimized, then each page should target a given keyword.

With wordpress I have the main page the post feed. The main keyword for the site is then created as a post and stickied to the top so it doesn't get booted off the page.

Each page/post should have a given keyword that other pages/posts will use to link TO IT. I wouldn't just scatter the links all over the place, but instead create supporting pages/posts for your main high volume keywords to give them more power in the SERPs.

This can potentially have other side effects like double and triple rankings for the same keyword.

When creating a website, don't just dive in, everything should be constructed with purpose. Think of it like designing a building; you are the architect for your website.

When I create a website, I plan many stages ahead of time. Which pages will support which pages, what the subjects are going to be about, etc etc. Once I run out of topics, I look for more and then plan the next stages.

I don't know why most people try to push or optimize only the main page. In the past I have ranked some other pages of my websites in the search engines. I think you should continue building links. After all you have already started.

Backlink both. Don't overdo backlinking to an inner page - trust me, it is suicide!

Build your links as naturally as you can to avoid problems. If you linked only to the inner page instead of the index page, I am quite certain you would end up screwed by Google pretty soon! Don't do it, link to all pages evenly.

Look it depends upon you. what you want if you want to promote your inner pages then you should do proper seo of the inner pages of your site. in my point of view home page is always so important. So you should first improve the rankings of your home page. Then you can also try for the inner pages when you are satisfied with the home page rankings.

Yep, totally depends really. If the page that is ranking is not your sales page and you make no money from it then there is not much point in having it ranking above your homepage. You could either monetize the inner ranking page or change the kw optimisation of that page and increase the optimisation on your main page.

Also, as others have said you should always hit your inner pages with backlinks as well as your homepage.

Getting inner pages in search results is actually a good thing for you. The sole aim of the website is pulling traffic and converting it. I would suggest you to link those pages together so that user which is landing on your inner page can easily navigate upto your home page.

Its about keyword density on your homepage, and backlinking with same niche will make your home page a strong contender.
