Does more pages mean better??? {Mega Sites}

I've noticed that many websites that rank high with one or two keywords have hundreds - perhaps thousands of pages. They have a lot of content per page.

Just wondering if someone has a website that is well optimized, relevant backlinks and has at least a few thousand pages that have basically a thousand words per page (and pages are added every day) - will this website eventually become an authoritative site and possibly have the chance to rank in the top three of a two KW (popular) niche?

Please answer only if you have a website of this calliber or experience in building mega-sites. I'm not interested in people who "think" it should be this way or not - I'm not trying to be a jerk - just like to know what your EXPERIENCE of this is. Thank you.

    I don't think so.

    More pages means more place to add your content and more long trail inner links opportunities. It is good for the searching engines and spiders, but we should consider our capability to control the pages, if you have only 1-2 people working for this site, you will have no time and energy to update it as frequently as you can.

    And the quality and content itself is more important than the number of pages, e.g. you only have 20 pages but all of them bring traffic and your customers like them and send you enquiries or wish to buy something, this is much better than you have 100 pages but 95 pages are of high bounce rate and % of exit.

    I have a site with 420 posts, an average post being about 750 plus words. I find new posts index within minutes or hours and rank decently well without off site SEO if not a terribly competitive keyword. I earn far more from my bigger sites than smaller sites.

    I also have smaller sites and they're good for going after 1 keyword.

    i don' think so. if you have more pages, how can you make all of them full with quality content?if you can not achieve, all of them will influence each other. especially after panda, quality is more important than before.

    Search Engine Love new content , that the fact.
    If all of your page is quality and been index . I believe you will get a high rank as well.
    It hard to manage a huge numbers of pages but it do help it every page do quality enough and bring a good link juice.

    I remember watching one of Matt Cutt's youtube videos before, and he said more pages had minimal, if any, effect of how well your website is ranked.

    I think that more often it is that sites with a lot of content filled pages get a lot of backlinks, which leads to higher SERPs

      You'd also need to separate out that the megasites tend to be quite old and have alot of linkjuice. Bigger sites defiinitely seem to rank really well though. Just look at the directory sites occupying top 10 in even competitive niches like lawyers.

        LOL!!! Of course it matters! That's the number one thing to
        building an authority site. Content and LOTS of it!

        More people should strive to build authority sites.
