The Little Seed of A Website Idea, How to Make it Grow?

I've had this web idea for about a year now. I want to start a campaign that I hope will be quite popular, get talked up, drive lots of people to site for being involved, and as a side bonus I hopefully get to earn a living.

I believe I have a large base of consumer interest that I can build through forums.

The idea is to have a site with a blog that others can participate in as the campaign games momentum.

I just don't know enough about things to make sure I get off on the right foot.

I do understand about keywords and using them throughout my site and interactions everywhere, about regular content updating, about quality backlinks and such.

What I don't know is step one, two, three of how to build the site in preparation of setting off. I had joined "The Challenge" hoping it would teach me what I need to get this going, but I found that, while there is much to learn from it, it is more about finding niche keywords to profit from, rather than how to take off with something you already have in your mind.

Here's what I think I know so far:

1. Know what I want to do: I plan to market campaign idea through social interaction and building backlinks and such, monetize site and sell campaign paraphernalia.

2. Choose all my keywords: I think I know how to do this, and I'm sure I'll have refining to do as I grow, but I can learn along the way.

3. Purchase domain name: I know how to do that

4. Choose a host for my site: The only hangup here is knowing what size I'm going to need, I think.

5. Get WordPress or WordPressDirect: WPD is recommended by The Challenge, but the whole Challenge team I am involved with has already been involved in sites and they say WP is a lot better than WPD, though they said for a new person like me, maybe I should stick to WPD for The Challenge. This site idea is not associated with The Challenge though, so I'm not sure about it, and I've never done WordPress. There must be lots of books on how to use it though.

6. Know how I will monetize: This is really where I start getting lost. I don't want to jump into setting up a site and have no clue whatsoever about how I will monetize it. I have a feeling that this would be important in how I set it up. I've never done it before and I need some sort of place to learn step by step all about monetization. Lots of great info on this board, but it's overwhelming to hear words I've never heard and not know what they mean, and it's all a jumble. I'm an old woman and need numbered lists, as you can plainly see.

I think that's pretty much my biggest hurdle. If I knew how to set it up, I'd begin, and with the SEO techniques I am learning with my job, I can take off with marketing it.

I would love either a discussion on steps to take, or I'd also appreciate links to books that explain these things, or websites that explain in simple terms what you have to do.

Thank you!
