Adwords keyword formatting

I'm reformatting some of my adwords campaigns by breaking them down into smaller ad groups and rewriting the ads for a better QS but I'm still pretty new at this and had a question.

If I broad search 'widget' should I still have keywords like:

blue widget
red widget

or does the broad search take care of that? told you it was a noob question

    It should cover it. But just in case, run a search query report to see if it really does.

    Google has a quality rating for ads and costs per click take into account relevence, and ad quality, so it is better imo, to break down ad groups into specific bands, such as red widget, blue widget and widget, also i tend to use the three versions as well, ie, broad, phrase and exact, which give you a better view of what your CTR and is more specific

    Good info, thanks for the replys

    The reason I was asking is the main keyword the site was designed around has a common misspelling so I want to trap both. A good example would be 'sandpaper' which could be searched for as 'sandpaper' or 'sand paper'. Now say there is an ebook on this, trying to trap the misspelling of both my keyword would be:

    sand paper e book

    a keyword cannot get worse than that...

    How do other's handle this?

      Hi coog,

      Like alby suggested I would definitely breakdown your ad groups into the smallest possible ad groups. You should use every version of the keyword someone might click. Since each will earn their own separate quality score, you don't want the poor performers diluting the QS of your great performing keywords.

      I would caution you in using broad match type keywords. Those will generally cost you much more per click while being much less targeted. If you do use broad match keywords, put them in a separate campaign so that you can prevent them from burning all your budget and leaving nothing for you better targeted exact and phrase match keywords.
