Hey mlmmarketingguy (man that's a tongue twister!)

I'd love to be able to give you straight figure, but it kinda depends on the niche. Although 50,000 competition doesn't sound that difficult, your competition could be really well optimized...

If it's a niche you're passionate about though, who cares about competition?

Local keyword rankings are easy, what you have to do it have the area for your keyword in it, like Miami Golf Resort, which the keywords are not competitive, and your competition is only 50K so that is very easy to do. Any factor you have to take into consideration if you rank for a keyword and the domain is located in that state you will have better local rankings than you would have than world wide rankings.

If the keyword shows a local maps or "7 pack" then it will take at least 3 months to rank on the first page from my experience. If done right it should rank in less than 6 months on the first page.

Either way, with or without it have a local maps the rankings will be affected by backlinks so the main thing to do it backlink the page you are ranking.

Agreed, you need to size up the Google Places competition, it's not just competitions websites you need to worry about.

If you have a 7-pack of local listings at the top of the SERPs, even If your site is #1 in the organic search, you'll still be sitting at the middle of the SERPs, which isn't much fun.

A 7-pack can be beat, just saying don't skip them when doing keyword research.

You do know organic results can rank above local listings, right? :p

I do know some organic results rank higher than a local listings although I believe it depends on Google's discretion towards that word, not based on SEO.

Every keyword is different obviously, though in my experience localized keywords have indeed been much easier to rank, even for semi-competitive cities and niches. That said, it's impossible to say how long it will take to rank anything until you get in there and get your hands dirty.

Also, "50,000 competition" doesn't really mean anything. You're competing with the sites on page 1 to see if you can beat their rank. Just look at the metrics and figures that they have and decide whether or not you think you can do better. If you want you can PM me the keyword and I'll check it out and give you my opinion.

    Hope this helps.

For a keyword+geo location I had first page (#3 organic) ranking in a week for a result that had 175,000 competing pages. But competing pages mean nothing.

The site I built for my client is the 3rd site they have had done, and never ranked previously under any term. Currently I have 5 pages ranking under about 18 search terms and this site is only 3 weeks old. However, it is a 10 year old domain name. I just build a new site to replace a dysfunctional site.

    Can't over emphasize page optimization.

That said, I tried the site leasing idea. I dont have that much success with it. In reality, if places box comes up, most of the traffic goes there. So I find the traffic to my potential lease sites to be very very low. Makes it hard to justify.

I go for marketing the places listing to my clients. We get way more traffic from those. Makes clients very happy.

    Just my $.02.
