Linking To Internal Page Vs Home Page

I have been thinking of pushing a link campaign to one of my sites, but ever since I started with SEO I have had this question on my mind, which yet nobody has been able to satisfactorily answer:

Is there a rule as to how many of our backlinks should point to internal pages, as opposed to the home page? Does it depend on what kind of site it is? Is there any percent ratio?

I have heard that overly backlinking to internal pages can kill our websites, as it looks rather unnatural. So I am afraid of a penalty, but at the same time I want to get the most out of my backlinking efforts.

I would really appreciate if someone knowledgeable finds the time to answer this. Thanks!

A well linked site from the home page won;t do any ham.
The problem is when you link internal pages, it is a dead end. Compared to when you link the home page search bot can crawl from there to the first layer links, that is links linked from the home page.

If you create a website with good crosslinking, then I don't think it matters if you point all your links to internal pages. (of course some backlinks will be to home page, since the home page will naturally rank for certain keywords)
I personally just link to internal pages 95-99%, it does not hurt me.

by the way, I mainly do niche sites, it may be different for authority sites

There are no rules and no one (unless they work for Google) can give you the perfect answer you are looking for. It simply doesn't exist.

You should link to your home and to your internal pages. If you want an internal page to rank, than link to it more. On my blog I only link to my internal pages as they are my so called "money pages" and that is usually the case for most sites.

Just start linking. You learn as you go. Don't wait for anyone to give you the perfect answer because there isn't one.

There are no hard and fast rules or percentage of set for home page or internal pages. some sites have the PR of their internal pages higher than the home page. So I think there is no chance of any penalty from G.

There is no rule on how many to home verses internal. Back links are supposed to happen naturally when web masters think your content deserves mention on their site. So they should be most varied and not planned out.

Of course, then we web masters get into the game and try to rig the outcome by posting the links ourselves. So the more unordered and varied you can make then the better. That way it will look more natural.

You build quality internal/external links to pages you want to rank in the SERPs.

If you don't want to rank a page in the SERPs, don't build links, it's that simple.

No there isn't any rule for number of backlinks to internal pages and to the index page as well.

If you are getting tonne of backlinks in very short time that would raise a doubt to the search engine regarding your backlinking practices.
