Hello,
Can you experts shed some light on how difficult it is to rank above Google places, or local business listings? I have seen some websites rank above the listings, and am curious how difficult it is to make this happen.

Considering a few things:
My website has all of the necessary on page seo (i use seo-pressor plugin) and my websites have between 85-95% score with the plugin.
i have exact match domains with either .org, .net, or .com

And i am in the process of building links using a variety of programs and options such as social bookmarking, article marketing, forum profiles, blog comments, etc.

Doing all of the above mentioned, should i be able to rank above google business listings?

Thanks for any insight.

Is there a reason you can't use google places?

Before you even start thinking about this you have to be ranked #1. After that happens, I have it down to 75% of the time I can get above, but I have not been able to thoroughly test why I can't get above the other 25%. It is difficult to say whether this is related to the keywords, or what the deal is.

I want to rank for local businesses, buy building a website, get it to #1, and then sale advertising on it to local businesses. The competition that is on page 1 is not difficult competition at all, but Google places , or local businesses listings are at the top of most pages. There are some websites that are above the google listings, that still aren't very much competition.

If there is already a page ranking above places then it should just be based on your SEO skills to pass that page. If there was no page ranking above the places area then I would say the same as the last person. There is always a possibility that you will not show higher than it based on the keyword itself I think. I am just taking a guess but maybe Google believes some words are searched only by people looking for a local business, therefor showing the places higher than anything else.

As the last poster said too, why not just rank it in places? Its an extra set of backlinks and exposure anyway.

In my experience it is not anything special to beat Google Places. I have quite a few sites beating g places at the moment. Some time ago when doing my keyword research I used to leave keyword that had top 10 competitors like amazon, ebay or any other well known authority sites on the table, because I was afraid that I wouldnt be able to beat them.

The reality is that if the pages from authority sites do not have very high pr and/or high number of backlinks, then you do not have to do naything magical to outrank those pages.

Depends on what type of google places are displaying. If it is a seven pack. Forget it organic will always be below the places listing. Or if it is a blended display, there is a chance and which mainly depends upon your on page optimization for that specific keyword along with backlinks.

If you are getting local results on a results page, it is not possible to rank above them.

One thing you can do is go for sponsored listings... that will definitely makes you feel top ranked.

No offense C Rebecca, but you are wrong. I have seen many sites list above Google places, even with a "7 pack". I'll just keep going at it with proper on page seo, building lots of pages and posts on my blog that are optimized properly as well as building backlinks with my exact keywords in the anchor text.

I also have exact match domains for every one of my keywords. I am already on the 2nd and 3rd page in just a few days without any backlinks, but i want to get to #1

If the query is local in nature... then Google is going to bring Local results above above anything.
