Could somebody please explain the difference between social bookmarking, social media and social profiles and anything else social that I need to understand regarding acquiring backlinks. No sooner do I think I have "got it" than I read something that puts doubts into my mind

Thank you

I put this question in the SEO section but had no response - hopefully I will do better here

    1. Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to organize, store, manage and search for bookmarks of resources online. Unlike file sharing, the resources themselves aren't shared, merely bookmarks that reference them. Ref: Social bookmarking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    2. The term Social Media refers to the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue. Ref: Social media - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    3. Social Profiles - This one is self explanatory. It's really an identity of a user who associates with a social media like (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace) the user of those platforms create an identity or profile about themselves.

Now as far as backlinks are concern - You can post your website address into your profile or create a backlink from a social bookmarking site like digg, spinn or stumbleupon to name a few.
These sites are seen by Google as authoritative sites and hence give you a good backlink juice than non authoritative sites.

    Hope that helps

I agree with EmanuelR as I have little confusion between social media and social profile, so now my confusion has gone.
