Going to do my Own SEO, what is most worth my time?

Ok, so I am going to start a content-writing website because I love the work and it's really taking off. I have a limited amount of time to perform SEO and no financial budget to get me off the ground. My question: what SEO strategies are the best for this situation?

I have a basic knowledge of SEO. Got one page to rank to PR 3, 4-5 to PR 2, and 7-8 to PR 1 with one previous site.

Here are strategies I have found the most effective:

-Forum back linking
-Guest blogging
-Article marketing
-Directory submission

Can anyone offer me tips? Am I headed in the right direction?

These strategies are effective but most important thing which you should keep in your mind is that content should be of high quality. It should not be duplicate or of low quality. Other strategies which you can follow are
    Social Bookmarking
    Blog posting
    Link exchange

Yup also build quality hub pages and squido lenses. Web 2.0 properties, WordPress blog and blogger carry a lot of weigh if properly implemented and don't link all of them to your money sites. I will say you gotta have all you Article directories and Web 2.0 properties poiting to your site and all blog comment and forum profile pointing to your web 2.0 properties

      Include everything:

Article Submissions, Directory Submissions, Web 2.0 Properties, Blog Comments, Forum Profiles, RSS feeds, Social Networks, Social Bookmarks, you name it, I believe that diversifying backlinks and consistency is exactly what Google looks for when it comes down to rankings.

Put it all together into multi-tiered backlink structures and it will increase rankings dramatically.

I would include a wide spread of a lot of things, as mentioned above.

The effectiveness will be determined on what your competition is doing and how competitive your keywords are.

There is lots of info in this forum, just keep learning and implementing.

Firstly keep in mind that pagerank is meaningless (unless you're buying links and need a quick metric to judge the quality of site). Don't go for pagerank - go for SERP improvement.

Once you've done your keyword research you should use all the methods you listed. They won't all be as effective as each other, but link diversity is getting more and more important.

If you are starting off. One Golden tip
    Do not lose focus!

Try to concentrate on one thing, and excel with that. For e.g. if you plan to purchase something like SENUKE, then just focus on that tool alone.. master it than move on something else. (a tool or strategy, whatever it be.)

I would advise you not to get into article marketing. Since your website is content based.... And I am assuming that the content you are going to submit to directories will also be published on your website. This results in duplicate pages. Google tend to filter pages in the search results which carry same content.

As far as forum linking, guest blogging and directory submission is concerned... Go ahead.

It would be good for your website if you could get in to social media marketing. It helps in pulling good traffic.

You strategies are fine and correct and will definitely work. Just also focus on blog commenting and bookmarking all the links along with social media marketing. Also apart form submitting articles manually used paid subscription of BuildMyRank, this site submits you article (quality articles only) other sites and very soon that page where it submits get traffic don't know how. And I have personal experience with BMR it provides you instant and huge backlinks along with traffic.

All the above mentioned process I said because you have less time.

There are a lot of ways and strategies like forum posting, article submission and the like, however…

The most challenging part of online marketing is to come up with an idea to get people to link to your site. Whether developing an online marketing tool or any other reasons, but it has a strategy to find new ideas on a regular basis , the most common technique is to approach it with an open mind and a mind full of creativity.
