Yes, you told him correctly. Wait until the site is ready, then do the linkbuilding. It wouldn't hurt anything to go ahead and put the right title, description, etc. on the site now, but I wouldn't do anything off the site until you are ready to go with it.

I have started link building on a few of my websites when they were under construction. I always just make sure there is a title tag with the keywords or variations of those keywords are in place. Never affected my sites. Usually those sites would be up within a short period afterwards, but I don't see why it would be that big a deal even after that amount of time. At least it gets you indexed, and gets the crawlers active on your website.

There is no right or wrong answer on this topic as nobody knows Google's algorithm except Google.

But generally, repeat the same thing they read on articles or what others say in forums - but truth remains, nobody really know's Google's algorithm, even if they claim to know it, its changing on a daily basis by top professors hired by Google.

Actually, I've done that one before. I started building some links to my homepage the moment I noticed that my site was already indexed by Google and I haven't seen anything suspicious when I was building links to it even if it was under construction.

So I think it's not a bad thing to start building links to it....

Offcoures, its beneficial for your site but make sure title, keyword and most important description is original. Your site keyword density, prominence, proficiency and content must be up to date as par Google theology.

See, there is no risk in doing this. But keep one thing in mind... Backlinks bring referral traffic to the website... When visitor comes to your website and he find a website under construction that would leave a bad impression.

And, probably he would never return back to your website after visiting it once.
