Too Many Backlinks Too Fast?

Has anyone here actually experienced black listing or lowered SERPs for building too many backlinks too fast? Is 1000 backlinks within 3-4 weeks too much? They link to about 10 different pages (many of them deep links), and use varying anchor text.

Just wondering if I should hold back. The backlinks are from directories, social bookmarking sites, and lots of blog comments.

The scenario you stated probably wouldn't be an issue in most cases. New viral sites, like one comparing an actress to a horse, often do gain a lot of links quickly and naturally. Hot product sales sites do the same. It's something that happens a lot and as long as you don't do it on a truly huge scale you probably won't run into problems.

What is huge scale? That would be 10,000 autogenerated Blogger blogs pointing to your site or a 1000 sites with 100,000+ Markov generated pages each all pointing to your site. The really crazy things that blackhatters did back a few years ago when they first figured out how to game Google. Today, Google has gotten good at detecting this and will take action against it.

Another thing to consider is that not everything gets spidered and indexed at once. If you built 1000 article, directory, commenting and bookmarking links in a one day blitz it will probably be several weeks before they're all counted and, even then, some may not be.

Yep, and that's the reason why I'd be careful with building low quality links like most directories, social bookmarking sites and blog comments. Google knows the game, it's not about the link building speed in general, but quantity without quality won't end up good.

that all depends if the site is new or not.

Older the site, then 1000 backlinks is ok.. however, how regular are the backlinks, once in a blue moon, once every other month, etc... if it's like that, then you could face low rankings.

the key is consistency... regardless of age of site. though it should be a gradual increase of the backlinks received if it's a new site.

      Thanks for the replies.

I realize that age of the site is a factor. In my case the site is 6 months old. I first started it for PPC, did that for 4 months, and then started posting quality articles to attract organic traffic. I started out pretty slow and haven't been doing crazy amounts of backlinking until now.

I outsource backlinking to several people and do it myself as well, so they're by no means auto-generated blog comments, or anything nefarious like that. I was just worried that 1000 backlinks per month for a 6 month-old site might set off an alarm bell. I do have over 70 pages of quality, hand-written, unique content, and my goal is to eventually have an authority site -- not a spam, made-for-adsense site.

I agree with Loz. Build them gradually, and keep them consistant. I generally only do a handfull at a time.

Don't just focus on your backlinking though. Remember to keep ontop of your content, as that is essentially what your visitors AND the search engines are interested in.

I think 1000 in a month would be fine as long as they are of a good PR

I also use an article submission service and it submits my article to 4,000 sites at once giving me 4000 backlinks...

I was worried about it at first but I have got to 1st place in google using it
