.com vs. net vs. org for SEO results

Not to be a jagoff here but I've seen the studies by SEO experts claiming that a .org or .net is EXACTLY the same SEO-wise as a .com extension but for obvious non-seo reasons don't hold the same weight.

My question: Is this 100% accurate? I'd love some actual warriors who have tested the same .net vs. com vs. .orgs to come forth and prove this to me. I'm sure there are some gurus who have all 3 and can show that a .org can indeed outrank a .com or at least come very close on Google. Has anyone grabbed a .org for a competitive exact keyword match domain and outranked the .com competition for that same phrase? I'm just interested in Google for this test.

Thanks and I can't wait to hear about results.

Are these competitive emds? (Search volume please.) Did it take long to surpass the competition? Thanks for any info.

Knowing the competition level of the keyword/emd is not going to help you to understand the difference between (if any) .com, .org, .net better.

  • Hey,

There is no such difference in .net, .org and .com because ultimately the work is same and even the results. It completely depends on you as to how should add the tags that because that are most important.

Not true... but I know what you're saying, yes your ranking does ultimately depend on many SEO factor.

Google does give more authority to certain extensions, in this order...

      .edu
      .gov
      .com
      .org
      .net

if you're targeting a niche locally, say in Ireland, then a .ie is better than the above.

I guess my skepticism of .org and .nets bears out from the thought that I never see a .com and .net and .org of the same EMD ranked 1-2-3 on Google.

You would think that if they're equal weight or close to it, you'd see this all of the time but I've never seen it. In fact, why would this not be an IM must-do for those wanting to rank a specific emd for their niche? This has never been voiced to me at least on here as an easy way to rake it in.

        Thanks all.

    Out of the three...

    .com ranks the easiest.
    .org ranks second easiest.
.net takes the longest to rank.

Of course, the above is not conclusive. Just what
I found from ranking 100s of sites. And doing alot
    of testing.

Wrong, TLD has no impact on ranking, other than country specific such as .co.uk

This is the exact same thing I've noticed as well. I love .coms but I tend to have more consistent results with .orgs than .nets.

"TAKE ACTION" is the first thing everyone tells you and then they leave it at that. I'll add a second part: TRACK EVERYTHING" - It's the only way to ensure your ACTION leads to results.

I think having the .com or .org or .net is not the main factor but the main factor is that nature of the business you are doing and for what you are going to make a website that is more important.

Thats a debate that is going to carry on and on. I dont think there is a definitive answer. I have used a variety of extensions and it has not affected my rankings at all. The key here is to have a really good website with good unique content and build links slowly over time.

Lolz you must be new to this. Props for taking the time to test things yourself.

I have hundreds of sites myself and have built over a thousand sites for clients over the last year. I would estimate around 80% of all those to be EMDs com/net/org.

It makes no difference which of those three extensions you get. What matters more is domain history (yes most good EMDs actually have history and backlinks), even for domains that have been dropped/idle for years.

And yes there are many niches where EMD.com/.net/.org all rank in the top 4. In some of these niches they swap positions daily, it all depends on how competitive their link building efforts are.

EMD alone will not make you #1 and just because there's an EMD ranking in the top 3 doesn't mean that you will instantly get there by just buying the same EMD with a different extension. Backlinks matter.

Not like that i thing, i haven't found any difference to have a domain in .org, .com and .net. if i type a keyword, the result of the search shows and indicate the keywords only, its not focusing the .org or .net.

Google gives no authority to any domain extension. Period.

Anyone that says so, is just blowing smoke.

There are more .edu on percentage that may be authority sites.
But that does not mean a .edu has more authority.

Just because the world is crammed with .coms does not mean that
they themselves carry any extra weight. But since the percentage
is high, and one sees them most often, people think, "Gee, I see
them, so they MUST be the best!"

People mistake this all the time, and it makes for good forum
      dumping.

      Why, I have no idea.

So I think it's just like names.....We are all human beings but have different names. And our names have nothing to do with what we have achieve or done. Same goes with domain extensions....

They are all domains, but totally different in extensions..And extensions have nothing to do with what website will be the best....

Domain extension won't matter as much as the quality of the contents and the back link references it got from other sites. '.com' domains are preferable b'coz most of the people think it as default extension.

Even if one of them held more value it would probably be as powerful of a difference as maybe one PR 0 backlink.

I have a site that ranks #1 for a two word keyword that has a .me extension.

My site that has the .me extension is beating wikipedia which is .org and several big brand .com online retailers.

Google looks at the content on your site and the kind of links pointing to it. I have high quality content and back links, that's what matters. Google is not looking at my site and saying "Hey, that's a .me so it must be a bad site"

Think about it logically, it's Google's job to return the highest quality and most relevant results for a search query. The TLD is not a messure of the quality or authority of a site/page.
