Are directory submissions worth the money? I know there are free ones... which probably make sense to submit to.

What about yahoo directory? Is it worth $299.00?

Thanks for your reply.

I never saw how that could possibly be worth it-- maybe 7-8 years ago when yahoo was the biggest guy on the block. I'm sure others more knowledgeable than myself will advise.

Well since you are questioning it, I suggest you just do it manually...

Find list of directories via search engines and find the
ones the have high PR and/or alexa rank etc.

      All the best!

      • Okay.

Once upon a time, an eon ago in Internet chronology, it was considered trendy and profitable to build a directory site. There were general directories and specialized directories. People who built these sites pulled data from DMOZ and Yahoo.

So, if you were listed in either place, you ended up with a LOT of directory backlinks.

That is why you hear the (old and way obsolete) advice about getting listed in a directory.

These days there is no benefit as far as I can tell. People don't manually comb through directories (how passe!), they use search engines.

It obviously isn't good for traffic but would it be a good idea just for diversity of backlinks?
How about the guys that offer 2,000 directory submissions for $x
Seems like all those backlinks at once would not be good

My advice don't waste your money with Yahoo Directory. You can easily rank your sites with free alternatives.

I heard that the true benefit is that google gives the yahoo directory high marks and that the directory also provides quality backlinks. I did it... because my main competition was also doing it. Yes, I believe it was expensive... However, if it bumps me up even a spot or two on google (say 7th to 6th or 5th) in some of my key words... then it might have been worth it. I can only hope. As others have said... perhaps I could have received more bang for my money elsewhere.

Just FYI. I run two link directories and many (and I stress "many") of the websites that submit have pretty solid PR to begin with, so personally I feel that there is benefit to having links from them even if they are PRNA.

I think the benefit lies in the fact that links from them reside on different C-Class IP addresses...

    FWIW...

Directory submission has less value when it comes to search engine rankings nowadays. But it will not hurt you in doing it either.

Well I signed up for Yahoo and BOTW today, although BOTW was for the 1 year listing. I am a PR 3 now trying to rank for very competitive keywords.

If those listings, along with the other SEO I am doing gets me organic traffic a few weeks earlier, then it was all worth it. Your sites have to have the potential to earn enough income to offset the costs though. Some of my other sites I wouldn't even think about paying that kind of money and don't need to, to be at the top.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Another point... I'm doing pretty well with some keywords on google (for example one keyword is 5th). However, yahoo lists my website for that same keyword 28th. Getting top 3-5 on Yahoo can't hurt either.

My colleague uses yahoo all the time...

Time will tell and thanks for all your responses!

Yahoo directory is not worthwhile for very new or content/quality deficient sites. Rest depends upon the niche or services you provide on your site.

The problem with DMOZ is submit and hold your breath for 2, 3, 6 months and maybe it will get listed.

Do not waste your money on directory submissions, they are not as powerful and relevant as they use to be. You will not drive traffic to your website using directories.

Just forget about Directories alltogether for Ranking or Traffic. TOTAL waste of time and maybe money.
