You think of the GREATEST kw for your site, that you would like to buy a domain for, I mean you just made this up in your head, literally and it sounds catchy as hell

then you go search for the .com domain

TAKEN

so many expletives fly out of my mouth when I am searching for domains
sh** G** D**, Jesus Chr..........

But then when you find one available its like ahhhhhhh
then you think, hmmm that one doesnt sound NEAR as good as that other one that is taken

The amount of squatted on dot coms is amazing. Yes, almost every halfway decent name ever has been picked off already.

Actually for my new offline business(well it will also have a large web presence but its a brick and mortar business)

I just found a few good ones, its hard to think of an easy to remember brand name that is also available the .com

One thing I think I will do is name the domain , something else than the business name, which is a bit unconventional but nobody said you have to name your domain the same as the name of your business.

as to the one who said the domain is unimportant TRUE to get to number 1 however
since this is a business I will be shipping products to customers, its critical to have a CATCHY EASY TO REMEMBER, EASY TO SPELL ..... .com domain name, to take orders on, that will be printed on all the literature and packaging. Thats why it is a bit tricky thinking of a name.

I guess no harm in having more than one as feeders like I do with the resort but
my resort domain is not the same name as the resort name, (it is similar though)

Well, having the same domain name as your business name makes it much easier for customers to remember. If they don't remember the domain name, they can google the business name and the site comes up.

Why would you not want to have the same name?

By the way, what do domain squatters want, if they say "this domain is for sale" click here to inquire

    100,500? 1000?
I am interested in a new name I found (yes it would sound great as both business name and domain name) but

    its being squatted on

    of course

I have heard that most of these guys are delusional parasites who try to charge thousands of dollars for any domain

The reason that they squat on them is because they are a bit delusional about what they are worth. They basically sit back and hope that someone comes along and needs/wants the domain bad enough to pay way over the odds for it.

you can always take a great domain that is taken and just add a single letter to it such as X or i

thats ok for SERPs but does not work with branding

      If I want to buy

      DiscountShoes.com
      and its taken

buying DiscountShoesx.com will do me no good for branding that as my site

You want me to put on my packages I am mailing to customers
      DiscountShoesx.com

they will go to google and Enter DiscountShoes.com
      they will forget the x

or look at the x and say WTF is that?

thats the exact reason Discount-Shoes.com would not work for branding

they would still go back in and type the non hyphenated version, most of the time
unless they were staring right at the domain name

      IMO branding has to be
EXACT keyword you want in the domain
      no hyphen
      and the .COM

    bestsearchengine.com or google.com
    as well as
    bestcmssystem.com or wordpress.org ?

If you get my idea, I want to say that when it comes to branding - DiscountShoes is definitely not a good idea. Neither do DiscountShoesX.com.

As a user, I'd never open a website with exact-match domain. When I was younger I didn't know what is the micro niche business, and still never opened a domain like "thebestgamesforpc.com" ... it sounds like a SCAM. As soon as I get into the Micro Niche Business I realized IT IS a scam.
Furthermore all the .com/net/org domains are taken from these micro niche website builders.

Right now I am looking forward for domain names with "branding" rather than "exact matching".

I mentioned in my main post this is for BRANDING

    not EMDs for SERPS
some just either dont read that, or choose to ignore that

as for Discountshoes.com no I would not use a name like that for a brand, sounds ridiculous
I was just illustrating the non workability of adding x etc for branding type names, its absurd

    but
there are a lot of Brand names that dont necessarily sound that imaginative, they sound like EMD keyword names, some people just have no imagination

isnt there a site called Cheaptickets.com?
I think thats a pretty heavy hitter type of site, surely an authority site

whats the difference that name sounds about like Discountshoes.com? same thing, both sound kind of cheesy, but in the case of Cheaptickets.com I think they are hugely busy site

If this is targeted to me - I have to say that I couldn't understand some parts of your posts. And I was trying to agree with you, but answering awj888 that adding a letter "X" is not a solution.

I just tried to be helpful somehow.

Also, always there are exceptions - such is Cheaptickets.

Haha all the time! I went for like an hour trying out different word combinations for my new membership sites domain. The first name I wanted was taken and someone wanted 3,000 bucks for it.

You're right, the domain I settled with wasn't as good as the original one I wanted lol.

      WRONG

If you are branding the domain name is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT

      If your company is

      The Gap
      If you dont own TheGap.com

      you are totally screwed

      You MUST own YourCompanyName.com

If you dont people will think you are not a credible company

Show me a company who doesnt own their company name.com? and I will show you a company that is not worth much

If you are just trying to get traffic on Google , generic traffic for adsense etc
The domain name is not critical for traffic, but you can still somewhat brand a site that is catching 100s of keywords traffic...............so that the surfer feels comforable with the site or niche

You dont want to name the domain 12345.com or something worthless and unrelated as that
