PPC Strategy for a new website

Hi all,

Newbie alert: When it comes to Adwords/PPC, I don't know nothing...seriously.

Description:
I am going to launch a business directory (sort of) in a week or so. My website is properly optimized (on-site) and content is well-written. However, I haven't started any backlink campaign yet, but I plan to start once I reach somewhere with the site launch.

Anyways, I am seriously considering to go with Adwords/PPC campaign right after the launch of my site and I need some expert advice/suggestions on how to plan it.

Questions:
1. Would it be a good idea to start PPC campaign for a new website?
2. What PPC strategy should I adopt in terms of:
- keyword selection
- analyzing keyword competition
- cost of keyword (CPC)
3. How long do you think I should wait to get results? Or in other words, how much time would be good enough to run a managed PPC campaign?

I'll appreciate replies from PPC experts and pros.

    All of the above is important. PPC is only SEO that is paid for so approach it the same way. For a business directory, I recommend choosing keywords based on the category (automotive, real estate, etc.) and point the links to that category. This is one method I plan to use for my business directory PPC campaign. You must determine your cost based on your budget.

    For me the best strategy is to create the attractive ad and to use the right keyword in the ad for getting the results.
    And choose such words in creation of the keyword that more used by people for solution of their query and in your field. Then you will get the best results.

      Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate your time and efforts.

      I am getting a slight idea of how to get started but still, I need two things to get things rolling:

      1. What sort of keywords (related to my site) should I bid on? I mean, long tail are always a good idea for organic results, but can the same strategy be applied for PPC?

      3. As this is going to be my first move with PPC, I surely have a very limited budget, so how many keywords should I start my campaign with?

    Much of what you are asking is way to dependent on way too many variables for anyone to give solid advice.

    The best thing to do is to start with long-tails (less competitive) and test. Slowly build your list of keywords that convert. As you expand, slowly add shorter-tail (even a word??) keywords that get more searches (of course, more competitive/expensive) and test some more.

    To be honest, PPC is not really cut out for small budgets. I mean, it can be done; but, testing can get expensive when done right.

    If you're going for an authority site, PPC is a great way to test out which keywords will give you the most targeted traffic and get you a high CTR.

    I have 2 keywords I'm targeting, and although they virtually mean the same thing, one keyword gives me a 8-10% CTR and the other gets less than 5%.

    I'd recommend reading my AdWords lens on Squidoo, located in my signature below before you start working on your campaign.

    PPC is definitely a great way of generating traffic for a new site. In fact, it'll help you lay the foundations down for your SEO keyword research, help you test the performance of your website, and give you an idea as to the kind of conversion rates your site will generate in it's current state.

    In terms of keywords, use as many variations as possible that directly relate to your product or service - and don't be shy with the use of broad match modifier.
