SEO permalinks for Wordpress? What do I use? Can't Figure this out..

While posting the article, you can edit THAT part of the URL.
Look under the Title Section.

edit. make sure you know what you're doing. Editing the url of already published posts can mess up your rankings unless you can the necessary redirects in place.

They are brand new blogs, but thanks for the warning. I have 9 of them to get finished so trying to make sure I do this right the first time.. Also thanks, I might have missed it that (Didn't see an option to edit), checking again. Will report back.

You know what, I had the slug option turned off! Didn't realize there was a option for more settings in the top tab.. It's been so long since I last used Wordpress, used to bring in $500/month per site back in 04. Thanks!

EDIT: Didn't work, just made a 404 page..

I think you should only target the primary keyword not the long tail keyword in the URL to make it more effective and rememberable.

When creating the article just put the title in, then change the permalink to a smaller one. having huge URLS with lots of keywords or just longtail keywords in it wont help at all. focus on the main keywords.

If your site might get large, make sure the first element of the permalink is a number (such as %year%) so pages load quickly.

Not true.

It does not matter if the first element of the permalink is a number or not (at least for me).

Caching is the best option and if the sites are cached the permalink does not matter.

Did that on many blogs (the cookielessdomain blog is mine) and that's the only way to get max loading speed for WP besides tweaking apache web server itself.

Actually IS true.

When we're talking about TENS of thousands of posts in wordpress, not even caching can save you when trying to sort through a large database.

What happens when the cache needs refreshing, and there's a 1,000 people trying to view the post right this minute. Having a number like %year% before the %category% or %postname% helps alot in situations like that. Situations where there is a large database. A large database doesn't necessarily = a high traffic site, but in many cases that is so.

Wordpress is absolutely horrible with very large sites. There's some awful SQL queries in the core code. Most regular bloggers don't need to worry about it. You can probably have 500,000 hits in one day and survive just fine if the site has just 50 posts. As it is right now, large sites, like mashable.com for instance, have to hack the core.

this thread is going off topic. but knowing stuff like this is important when planning a new site. You never know, it might take off and you'll one day have a team of writers churning out dozens of posts per day.

First, set up the permalinks to /%category%/%postname%/, then use the method retsek said above.
