Rotating proxies for serp rank checking?

So I just got a new piece of tracking software and it's been about 2 months since I last checked the rankings.

I got a pop up message with a suggestion to add proxy accounts with a link to actually purchase additional proxies.

Is this normal? Should I ignore this? Will I be banned from any search engines?

Ya, you will get temporarily banned IF you are doing a ton of
    searches simultaneously.

More importantly, why bother updating your rankings manually
and having to deal with proxies and additional costs, not to mention
your time that it takes to update these rankings.

There are a ton of cheap and reliable rank checkers that do all of
it automatically, all you need to do is login and view your rankings.

    For example:

    Sescout.com
    Serpfox.com
AuthorityLabs.com (not recommended, way too expensive)

Thanks for the tip. Still expensive (to me) at ~$15/mo, which is $180 a year. Are online rank checkers reliable? Are they worth the monthly subscription?

I guess you need to look at what your times worth. If
you don't mind spending countless hours updating your
proxies and rankings, then no it's probably not worth it.

If you manage hundreds, and even thousands of keywords
and don't want to deal with any of that. Then yes, $15/mo
      is worth it.

I attempted to manually update my rankings too (likely using
a similar program) and boy was that a total waste of my time.
