I have a couple of sites that use WordPress and with each one I am using a static home page with a list of articles and posts in a widget on the side. I see a lot of sites that have their home page as a page that shows the post titles and excerpts from the most recent posts as the main part of the page, rather than something static.

Any thoughts on which is more effective?

If you are trying to rank your home page for specific keywords, then yes, use a static page. It will allow you to control the content on the page and rank easier for the keyword.

If I have an authority site with lots of posts, then I usually use a Magazine theme, but I rarely use a theme that just lists the posts on the homepage.

Yes, a magazine theme is what I am referring to, not just a listing of posts. Thanks DC

In you Wordpress Dashboard go to Settings then Reading

At the top of this page the first option is Front Page Displays

Here you can choose either Your Latest Posts or Static Page (Select Below).
